Steps 46 - 91






46. Remove the bolts and the RH valve cover.






47. Remove the retainers and the upper-to-lower intake bracket.






48. NOTE: Upper intake shown removed for clarity.

Remove the bolts in the sequence shown and remove the upper and lower intake.






49. Remove the bolt and the coolant bypass tube.






50. Remove the bolts and the KS.






51. NOTE: LH shown; RH similar.

Remove the exhaust manifolds.
1 Remove the 16 nuts.
2 Remove the exhaust manifolds.
3 Remove the exhaust manifold gaskets.
52. Remove the oil level indicator tube.






53. NOTE: LH shown; RH similar.

Remove the LH and RH engine mounts.






54. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

Remove the drain plugs from the engine block. Allow the coolant to completely drain.






55. Remove the 4 bolts and the oil filter adapter.
^ Discard the oil filter.
^ Discard the gasket.
56. Clean and inspect the oil filter adapter.
^ Flush the adapter with parts cleaner. If metal particles are present, install a new oil filter adapter.






57. Remove the 3 remaining bolts and the power steering pump.






58. Remove the bolts and the A/C compressor.






59. Install the special tool.
1 Loosen the bolt
^ Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).






60. Remove the coolant pump pulley.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Remove the coolant pump pulley.






61. Remove the coolant pump from the cylinder block.
^ Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces.
62. To remove the crankshaft pulley bolt, remove the upper fan shroud and electric fan.






63. Using the special tool to prevent the crankshaft pulley from turning, remove the pulley bolt.






64. Remove the bolt.






65. Using the special tool, remove the crankshaft vibration damper.






66. Using the special tool, remove the crankshaft front seal.






67. Remove the bolt and the belt idler pulley.






68. Remove the 4 front oil pan-to-timing cover bolts.










69. Remove the engine front cover fasteners in the sequence shown.






70. NOTE: Be careful when removing the gasket. It is reusable if not damaged.

Remove the oil pan and the gasket.






71. Remove the crankshaft position sensor pulse wheel.
72. Position the piston of the cylinder in which the roller followers are being removed at the bottom of the stroke and camshaft lobe at the base circle.






73. Using the special tool, compress the intake valve spring and remove the roller follower.






74. Using the special tool, compress the exhaust valve spring and remove the roller follower.
75. Repeat the above steps to remove all the roller followers.






76. Remove the bolts and the RH and LH timing chain tensioners.






77. Remove the RH and LH timing chain tensioner arms.






78. Remove the RH and the LH timing chains and the crankshaft sprocket.






79. Remove the RH and LH timing chain guides.






80. Remove the RH and LH cylinder heads. Discard the cylinder head bolts.






81. Remove the bolts and the oil pump screen and pickup tube.






82. Remove the oil pump screen and pickup tube spacer.






83. Remove the spacers and the windage tray.






84. Remove the bolts and the oil pump.






85. CAUTION: Do not stamp the top of pistons, as ring land damage can occur.

NOTE: Connecting rods and rod caps should be numbered to keep the correct orientation in the sequence.

Remove the connecting rod caps for piston numbers 1 and 6.
^ Discard the bolts.






86. CAUTION: Do not scratch the cylinder walls or crankshaft journals with the connecting rod.

NOTE: Before removing pistons, inspect the top of the cylinder bores. If necessary, remove the ridge or carbon deposits from each cylinder using a cylinder ridge reamer following manufacturer's instructions.

Using the special tool, push piston numbers 1 and 6 through the top of the cylinder block.
87. To remove pistons 3 and 5, 4 and 7, 2 and 8, turn the crankshaft 90 degrees and repeat the previous 2 steps.

CAUTION: Remove the cylinder heads before removing the crankshaft. Failure to do so can result in engine damage.






88. Remove the side bolts.






89. Remove and discard the bolts.






90. Remove the main bearing cap and the crankshaft lower main bearings from the cylinder block.






91. Remove the crankshaft, the crankshaft thrust washer, and the crankshaft upper main bearings from the cylinder block.
