Disassembly and Assembly

Disassembly





1. Using the special tool, partially compress the intake valve spring and remove the camshaft roller follower.





2. Using the special tool, partially compress the exhaust valve spring and remove the camshaft roller follower.

3. NOTE: Mark the locations of the hydraulic lash adjusters to make sure they are assembled in their original positions.





Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters.





4. Install the special tool between the valve spring coils to protect the exhaust valve stem seal from damage.





5. Using the special tool, compress the exhaust valve spring. Remove the exhaust valve spring retainer keys.

6. NOTE: Valve stem seals should be visually inspected if new seals are not installed.





Remove the valve spring retainer, the valve spring and the valve stem seal.
7. Remove the valve from the cylinder head.
8. Repeat the above 4 steps and remove all of the exhaust valve and spring assemblies.





9. Install the special tool between the valve spring coils to protect the intake valve stem seal from damage.





10. Using the special tool, compress the intake valve spring. Remove the intake valve spring retainer keys.

11. NOTE: Valve stem seals should be visually inspected if new seals are not installed.





Remove the valve spring retainer, the valve spring and the valve stem seal.
12. Remove the valve from the cylinder head.
13. Repeat the preceding 4 steps to remove all of he intake valve and spring assemblies.





14. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolt and washer.
15. Remove the 2 bolts and the tensioner.
16. Remove the secondary camshaft spacer, washer and bolt.





17. Remove the secondary camshaft sprockets and chain assembly.
18. Remove the 12 outboard camshaft bearing cap bolts and bearing caps.
19. Remove the 19 inboard camshaft bearing cap bolts and bearing caps.
20. Remove the camshafts.

Assembly

1. NOTE: Lubricate the camshaft lobes with clean engine oil.

Install the camshafts.





2. Install the camshaft bearing caps and bolts and tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.) in the sequence shown.

3. NOTE: Compress the tensioner and install the retaining pin.

NOTE: LH tensioner is shown, RH tensioner is similar.





Install the tensioner.
^ Tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).

4. CAUTION: Timing marks must be at the 12 o'clock position and indexed at the 6 o'clock position.





Install the secondary camshaft sprockets and chain as an assembly.





5. Install the special tool.

6. NOTE: Do not tighten the bolt at this time.





Install the secondary camshaft spacer, washer and bolt.

7. NOTE: Do not tighten the bolt at this time.





Install the camshaft gear, washer and bolt.





8. ighten the bolts in 2 stages:
^ Stage 1: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
^ Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.





9. Using the special tools, install the new intake valve stem seals. Repeat this step to install all the intake valve stem seals.





10. Using the special tools, install the new exhaust valve stem seals. Repeat this step to install all the exhaust valve stem seals.





11. Install the special tool between the valve spring coils to protect the exhaust valve stem seal from damage.
12. Install the exhaust valve in the cylinder head.





13. Position the exhaust valve spring and the spring retainer over the exhaust valve stem and valve seal.





14. Using the special tool, compress the exhaust valve spring. Install the exhaust valve spring retainer keys.
15. Repeat the above 3 steps to install all of the exhaust valve spring assemblies.





16. Install the special tool between the valve spring coils to protect the intake valve stem seal from damage.
17. Install the intake valve into the cylinder head.





18. Position the intake valve spring and the spring retainer over the intake valve stem and valve seal.





19. Using the special tool, compress the intake valve spring. Install the intake valve spring retainer keys.
20. Repeat the preceding 3 steps to install all of he intake valve spring assemblies.





21. Install the hydraulic lash adjusters in their original positions.





22. Using the special tool, partially compress the exhaust valve springs and install the camshaft roller followers.





23. Using the special tool, partially compress the intake valve springs and install the camshaft roller followers.
