LINCOLN:
2003-2004 NAVIGATOR

ISSUE

Some 2003-2004 Navigator vehicles built prior to 9/15/2003 equipped with the power liftgate, may exhibit a condition of the liftgate reversing direction on its own when closing in ambient temperatures above 90°F (32°C) and/or DTC B2825 present during self test.

ACTION

To service, first verify the condition either visually or by ruling out other possible causes as directed in the verification section of this TSB. If no other causes can be found, replace the left hand side drive motor encoder wheel with Part Number 4L7Z-78404D67-AA. Refer to the following Service Procedure.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

CONDITION VERIFICATION

1. Perform Self test to retrieve DTC's from the power liftgate module.

NOTE
IF DTC'S B2699, B2700, B2701, B2702, B2704, AND/OR B2705 ARE PRESENT, THE CONDITION IS MOST LIKELY NOT RELATED TO THE DRIVE UNIT. REFER TO WORKSHOP MANUAL SECTION 501-03 FOR DIAGNOSIS AND CHECK FOR PINCHED WIRES. IF THE CONDITION IS CORRECTED RETURN THE VEHICLE TO THE CUSTOMER. DO NOT CONTINUE WITH THIS TSB.

2. If the condition is present in temperatures below 90°F (32°C), then drive unit alignment may be the cause. Refer to Workshop Manual Section 501-03.

NOTE
IF THE GATE REVERSES EXACTLY AT THE LATCH POSITION, SUSPECT POOR STRIKER TO GATE ALIGNMENT, STRIKER ALIGNMENT TOO FAR FORWARD IN THE VEHICLE. ADJUST AS NECESSARY. IF THE CONDITION IS CORRECTED RETURN THE VEHICLE TO THE CUSTOMER, DO NOT CONTINUE WITH THIS TSB.

3. After performing condition verification Steps 1 and 2, if the condition is still present replace the left hand side drive motor encoder wheel.

ACCESS POWER LIFT GATE MOTOR

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one (1) minute. Refer to Workshop Manual Section 414-01.

2. Position the top portion of both the left and right side front and rear door seals aside.

3. Remove the C-pillar trim. Refer to Workshop Manual Section 501-05.

4. Remove the D-pillar trim panel. Refer to Workshop Manual Section 501-05.

CAUTION
TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE COAT HANGER RETAINER, USE A 3/16" FLAT BLADE SCREWDRIVER FOR STEP 5.

5. Remove the four (4) coat hooks.

a. Open the access cover.

b. Insert a screwdriver into the slot and rotate clockwise.

6. If equipped with rear climate control, remove the center pin-type retainers on the headliner located near the rear vents.

7. Remove the rear pin-type retainers.

CAUTION
TO AVOID DAMAGING THE HEADLINER, DO NOT CREASE OR BEND.

8. Partially lower headliner to access the power liftgate motor.

9. Remove the upper liftgate trim.

10. Position the wiring harness aside.
