Removal
Transmission-4x2Special Tool(s)
WARNING: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety chain. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.
NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms can occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The customer needs to be notified that they can experience slightly different upshifts (either soft or firm) and that this is a temporary condition and will eventually return to normal operating condition.
NOTE: If disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
3. Remove the driveshaft.

4. Remove in the order indicated in the above illustration and table.
5. Carry out the transmission fluid cooler-backflushing and cleaning if the transmission is being overhauled or installing a new or remanufactured transmission.
Item 6: Fuel Line Removal Note
1. Disconnect the RH catalyst monitor connector and the fuel lines from the bracket.
Item 12: Transmission Assembly Removal Note
1. Install a suitable jack under the transmission.
Item 19: Exhaust Flag Nuts Removal Note
1. Discard the flag nuts and the gasket.
Item 20: Heated Oxygen Sensor Electrical Connector Removal Note
1. Remove the two RH heat shield bolts and position the RH heat shield aside.
2. Disconnect the RH heated oxygen sensor from the transmission.
Item 23: Exhaust Hanger Removal Note
1. NOTE: This step may require an assistant.
Remove the transmission-mounted exhaust hanger and the three-way converter system.
1 Remove the bolt and the converter assembly.
2 If required, remove the second bolt and mount.
Item 25: Torque Converter Nuts Removal Note
1. NOTE: Make an identifying mark on the nut, stud and flexplate to allow for correct installation.
Remove the four torque converter nuts.
Item 31: Solenoid Body Harness Connector Removal Note
1. NOTE: Clean the area around the connector to prevent contamination of the solenoid body connector.
Remove the screw from the solenoid body connector and disconnect the connector.
Item 34: Wire Harness Retainer Clips Removal Note
1. Disconnect the LH heated oxygen sensor and the harness clips from the transmission.
2. Disconnect the LH catalyst monitor connector from the transmission.
Item 35: Fluid Cooler Nuts Removal Note
1. CAUTION: Do not damage the cooler tubes. Hold the transmission case fittings with a wrench.
Disconnect the transmission cooler tubes.
Item 37: Fuel Line Bracket Removal Note
1. Position the bracket and fuel lines out of the way to gain access to the other transmission retaining screws.
Item 39: Transmission Assembly Removal Note
1. Install the special tool.
