Components:
ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. CHECK SHIFT LOCK OPERATION
a. Adjust the shift lever to the P position.
b. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
c. Check that the shift lever cannot be adjusted to any position other than P.
d. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, depress the brake pedal and check that the shift lever can be adjusted to the other positions.
2. CHECK SHIFT LOCK RELEASE BUTTON OPERATION
a. Using a screwdriver, remove the shift lock release cover.
b. When operating the shift lever with the shift lock release button pressed, check that the lever can be adjusted to any position other than P.
3. CHECK KEY INTERLOCK OPERATION
a. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
b. Depress the brake pedal and adjust the shift lever to any position other than R
c. Check that the ignition key cannot be turned to the LOCK position.
d. Adjust the shift lever to the P position, turn the ignition key to the LOCK position and check that the ignition key can be removed.
4. INSPECT SHIFT LOCK CONTROL UNIT ASSEMBLY
a. Measure the voltage according to the values in the table.
HINT: Do not disconnect the shift lock control unit assembly connector.
Standard Voltage:
b. Measure the resistance according to the values in the table.
HINT: Do not disconnect the shift lock control unit assembly connector.
Standard Resistance:
REMOVAL
1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
2. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER KNOB
a. Remove the shift lever knob.
3. REMOVE CONSOLE PANEL UPPER FRONT
4. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL LOWER
5. REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
6. REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE RH
7. REMOVE COWL SIDE TRIM SUB-ASSEMBLY RH
8. REMOVE COWL SIDE TRIM SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
9. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL SUBASSEMBLY LOWER
10. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUBASSEMBLY NO.2
11. REMOVE GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR ASSEMBLY
12. REMOVE FLOOR CARPET COVER CENTER RH
13. REMOVE FLOOR CARPET COVER CENTER LH
14. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL LOWER CENTER
15. SEPARATE TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY
a. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the cable end from the shift lever assembly.
b. Pull out the stopper cap of the transmission control cable assembly.
c. Turn the socket of the transmission control cable counterclockwise and remove the stopper cap.
NOTICE: Do not push in the stopper cap.
16. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER
a. Disconnect the pattern select switch connector, the shift lock control computer connector and the indicator light wire connector.
b. Remove the 4 nuts and disconnect the shift lever assembly from the vehicle.
DISASSEMBLY
1. REMOVE POSITION INDICATOR HOUSING
a. Using a screwdriver, remove the position indicator housing from the shift lever assembly.
NOTICE: Do not damage the position indicator housing.
2. REMOVE SHIFT LOCK RELEASE BUTTON COVER
a. Using a screwdriver, remove the shift lock release button cover from the position indicator housing assembly.
3. REMOVE SHIFT LOCK RELEASE BUTTON
a. Remove the shift lock release button, spring and cover from the position indicator housing.
NOTICE: Do not damage the position indicator housing.
4. REMOVE POSITION INDICATOR LIGHT GUIDE
a. Using a screwdriver, remove the position indicator light guide from the shift lever assembly.
5. REMOVE POSITION INDICATOR SLIDE COVER
a. Remove the position indicator slide cover from the position indicator housing lower.
6. REMOVE POSITION INDICATOR SLIDE COVER NO.2
a. Remove the position indicator slide cover No.2 from the position indicator slide cover.
7. REMOVE INDICATOR LIGHT WIRE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the indicator light wire sub-assembly from the shift lever assembly
8. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER WIRE GUIDE
a. Remove the shift lever wire guide No.1 from the indicator light wire.
9. REMOVE POSITION INDICATOR HOUSING LOWER
a. Remove the position indicator housing lower from the shift lock control unit.
ADJUSTMENT
1. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION
a. Apply the parking brake.
b. Lock the wheels with chocks to secure the vehicle.
c. Put the vehicle into the READY-on state.
d. Move the shift lever to the D position and release the brake pedal.
NOTICE: Be sure to apply the parking brake and lock the wheels with chocks to secure the vehicle.
e. Slowly move the shift lever to the N position and measure moving distance (A) of the shift lever from the original point to the gear activation point.
NOTICE: Be sure to move the shift lever slowly.
f. Move the shift lever to the R position and release the brake pedal.
NOTICE: Be sure to apply the parking brake and lock the wheels with chocks to secure the vehicle.
g. Slowly move the shift lever to the N position and measure moving distance (B) of the shift lever from the original point to the vehicle activation point.
NOTICE: Be sure to move the shift lever slowly.
h. Check that moving distances (A) and (B) shown in the illustration are almost the same.
HINT: If moving distances (A) and (B) are almost the same, adjustment of the shift lever position is not necessary.
^ If moving distance (A) is shorter than (B), perform adjustment of the shift lever position [*1].
^ If moving distance (B) is shorter than (A), perform adjustment of the shift lever position [*2].
2. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION
a. If moving distance (A) is shorter than (B) [*1]:
HINT: If the shift lever is moved from the R to N position, the moving distance of the shift lever from the original point to the gear activation point becomes longer.
1 Move the shift lever to the N position.
2 Loosen the 2 bolts.
3 Slightly turn the park/neutral position switch counterclockwise.
4 Tighten the 2 bolts in the order shown in the illustration.
Torque: 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.)
5 Recheck the shift lever position.
b. If moving distance (B) is shorter than (A) [*2]:
HINT: If the shift lever is moved from the D to N position, the moving distance of the shift lever from the original point to the gear activation point becomes longer.
1 Move the shift lever to the N position.
2 Loosen the 2 bolts.
3 Slightly turn the park/neutral position switch clockwise.
4 Tighten the 2 bolts in the order shown in the illustration.
Torque: 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.)
5 Recheck the shift lever position.
3. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER OPERATION
a. While moving the shift lever from the N position to each position, check that the lever moves smoothly and that the shift position indicator comes on properly according to the shift lever position.
b. Put the vehicle into the READY-on state and check the following:
1 When the shift lever is moved to the D position, the vehicle moves forward.
2 When the shift lever is moved to the R position, the buzzer sounds and the vehicle moves in reverse.
NOTICE: The vehicle should not move when the shift position indicator is off.
REASSEMBLY
1. INSTALL POSITION INDICATOR HOUSING LOWER
a. Install the position indicator housing lower to the shift lock control unit.
HINT: Engage the claws securely.
2. INSTALL INDICATOR LIGHT WIRE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Install the indicator light wire sub-assembly to the shift lever assembly.
3. INSTALL SHIFT LEVER WIRE GUIDE
a. Install anew shift lever wire guide No.1 to the shift lever assembly.
b. Install the shift lever wire guide No.1 to the indicator light wire. Cut off the shift lever wire guide No.1 as shown in the illustration.
4. INSTALL POSITION INDICATOR SLIDE COVER NO.2
a. Install the position indicator slide cover No.2 to the position indicator slide cover.
NOTICE: Be sure to install the position indicator slide cover No.2 in the correct direction.
5. INSTALL POSITION INDICATOR SLIDE COVER
a. Install the position indicator slide cover to the position indicator housing lower.
NOTICE: Be sure to install the position indicator slide cover with the mark facing to the front of the vehicle.
6. INSTALL POSITION INDICATOR LIGHT GUIDE
a. Install the position indicator light guide to the position indicator housing lower.
HINT: Engage the claws securely.
7. INSTALL SHIFT LOCK RELEASE BUTTON
a. Apply MP grease to the shift lock release button and spring.
b. Install the shift lock release button, spring and cover.
8. INSTALL SHIFT LOCK RELEASE BUTTON COVER
a. Install the shift lock release button cover to the position indicator housing.
9. INSTALL POSITION INDICATOR HOUSING
a. Install the position indicator housing to the shift lever assembly.
HINT: Engage the claws securely
INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL SHIFT LEVER
a. Install the floor shift assembly with the 4 nuts.
Torque: 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE: Tighten them in the order, A, B, C and D.
b. Install the pattern select switch connector, the shift lock control computer connector and the indicator light wire connector.
2. CONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY
a. Connect the socket of the transmission control cable assembly to the shift lever assembly
b. Turn the socket of the transmission control cable assembly clockwise and install the stopper cap.
NOTICE: Make sure that the transmission control cable assembly (socket) is firmly secured to the shift lever assembly.
c. Push the stopper cap to the socket as shown in the illustration.
d. Connect the control cable end to the shift lever assembly.
NOTICE:
^ Install the transmission control cable assembly with the graduated cuts to face upward to prevent torsion of the inner cable.
^ Push the cable end to the bottom of the pin.
^ Confirm that the connection between the socket and the shift lock control unit is fixed.

6. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUBASSEMBLY NO.2
7. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL SUBASSEMBLY LOWER
8. INSTALL COWL SIDE TRIM SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
9. INSTALL COWL SIDE TRIM SUB-ASSEMBLY RH
10. INSTALL FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE RH
11. INSTALL FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
12. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL LOWER
13. INSTALL CONSOLE PANEL UPPER FRONT
14. INSTALL SHIFT LEVER KNOB
a. Install the shift lever knob.
15. INSTALL BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL
16. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION
17. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION
18. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER OPERATION
19. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
