Removal

WARNING: Persons working on the supplemental restraint system (SRS) must be fully trained and have been issued with the safety guidelines.

WARNING: Allow a period of 10 minutes to elapse after disconnecting the battery before undertaking any work on the SRS.

WARNING: The SRS electrical connectors are unique. DO NOT force, or attempt to connect electrical connectors to the wrong sockets.

WARNING: The correct procedures must always be used when working on SRS components.

WARNING: It is imperative that before any work is undertaken on the SRS system, the appropriate information is read thoroughly.

WARNING: Always disconnect both battery cables before beginning work on the SRS system. Disconnect the ground cable first. Never reverse connect the battery.

WARNING: Take extra care when handling SRS components.

1. Make the air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) safe.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
3. Remove the driver air bag module.

CAUTION: Make sure that the wheels and tires are in the straight-ahead position. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the components.

NOTE:
Note the steering wheel to steering column alignment marks.

4. Remove the steering wheel.
^ Disconnect the electrical connector from the clockspring.
^ Restrain the steering wheel and remove the bolt.





NOTE:
Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.

5. Remove the steering wheel rear trim panel.
^ Disconnect the electrical connector.
^ Remove the 4 screws.





6. Remove the steering wheel spoke trim rear panels.
^ Release from the 4 clips.





7. Remove the steering wheel spoke trims.
^ Release from the 2 clips.





8. Remove the 2 clips for the driver air bag module from the steering wheel.

Installation

All vehicles
1. Install the 2 clips for the driver air bag module to the steering wheel.
2. Install the steering wheel spoke trims.
^ Secure the clips.

3. Install the steering wheel spoke trim rear panels.
^ Secure the clips.

4. Install the steering wheel rear trim panel.
^ Connect the electrical connector.
^ Install the 4 screws.

Right-hand drive vehicles

CAUTION: Make sure that the wheels and tires are in the straight-ahead position. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the components.

CAUTION: RHD vehicles: With the wheels and tires in the straight-ahead position, the bottom timing mark on the steering column must be aligned with the steering wheel mark, see illustration below.

5. Carefully install the steering wheel, align the clockspring and align to the steering column.
^ Tighten the bolt to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).





Left-hand drive vehicles

CAUTION: Make sure that the wheels and tires are in the straight-ahead position. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the components.

CAUTION: LHD vehicles: With the wheels and tires in the straight-ahead position, the bottom timing mark on the steering column must be aligned with the steering wheel mark, see illustration below.

6. Carefully install the steering wheel, align the clockspring and align to the steering column.
^ Tighten the bolt to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).





All vehicles
7. Install the driver air bag module.
8. Connect the battery ground cable.
