Tilt Motor Mechanism Binding at Top Position
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
New Range Rover (LM) 3A101029 and up
SITUATION:
TILT MOTOR MECHANISM BINDS
The customer may complain that the steering wheel is "stuck" in the highest position. Excessive deflection within the tilt motor bearings can permit binding of the drive gear mechanism at the limit of travel.
RESOLUTION:
INSTALL NEW SPECIFICATION TILT MOTOR
When the binding complaint is confirmed, installation of the new specification tilt motor as outlined in the procedure below will resolve the problem.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
INSTALL NEW TILT MOTOR
1. Move the drivers seat fully rearwards for access.
2. Fully extend the steering column for access.
CAUTION:
After switching off the ignition, two minutes must elapse before disconnecting the battery. Failure to wait two minutes will damage the navigation computer.
3. Turn off ignition switch and wait two minutes.
4. Refer to RAVE General Information, Electrical Precautions, Battery and disconnect the battery ground cable.
5. Release the steering column extension bellows from the steering column trim surround.
6. Remove three Torx screws securing the steering column lower trim to the steering column. (Arrowed in Figure 1)
7. Release and remove the steering column lower trim.
8. Disconnect the multi-plug from the steering column tilt adjustment motor. (Arrowed in Figure 2)
9. Remove and discard two Allen screws securing the steering column tilt adjustment motor to the steering column. (Arrowed in Figure 3).
NOTE:
The drive spindle (inset in Figure 3) can fall from its location when removing the steering column tilt adjustment motor. Care should be taken to ensure that the drive spindle is not lost or damaged during this procedure.
10. Remove the steering column tilt adjustment motor from the steering column tilt adjustment drive gear.
11. Install the original drive spindle into the new steering column tilt adjustment motor. (Arrowed in Figure 4).
NOTE:
It may be necessary to adjust the steering column tilt adjustment drive gear ("A" in Figure 5) to align the drive spindle and the drive gear and achieve engagement of the steering column tilt adjustment motor.
12. Align the steering column tilt adjustment motor to the steering column tilt adjustment drive gear.
13. Install by hand the two new Allen screws to secure the steering column tilt adjustment motor.
14. Evenly and progressively tighten adjustment motor securing Allen screws to 5.5 Nm (4.1 lbf.ft).
15. If the steering column tilt adjustment drive gear nut CA in Figure 5) moves on the shaft while engaging the steering column tilt adjustment motor, torque the steering column tilt adjustment drive gear nut to 3 Nm (2.2 lbf.ft).
16. If a white paint mark is evident on the steering column tilt adjustment drive gear bearing housing CB in illustration 5), torque the steering column tilt adjustment drive gear nut to 3 Nm (2.2 lbf.ft).
17. Connect the multiplug to the steering column tilt adjustment motor.
18. Install the steering column lower trim to the steering column and secure with screws.
19. Install the steering column extension bellows to the steering column.
20. Connect the battery ground cable.
