Drill Propeller Shaft
*NOTE:Prior to installation into the vehicle, all new or used propeller shafts must be drilled at the splined end through to the hollow core of the tube. New style propeller shaft TVB500290K is predrilled during manufacture.*
CAUTION:
It is important that the end of the propeller shaft is fully covered to prevent contamination with metal particles during the drilling operation.
*1. If drilled propeller shaft TVB500290K is to be installed, go to Section "Check Differential Alignment" below.
2. If propeller shaft TVB000370K is to be installed, identify the location of the pilot hole. (A in Figure 5)*
3. Cover the end of the propeller shaft using masking tape (B in Figure 5).
4. Make a hole in the centre of the masking tape over the pilot hole. (C in Figure 5.)
NOTE:
Gripping the propeller shaft for drilling can be done effectively with a lathe, carefully securing the propeller shaft main body in the lathe chuck. Care must be taken to ensure that the chuck jaws do not crush the thin walled tube.
5. If a lathe is used, carefully mount the shaft in the chuck.
6. If a lathe is not used, with the aid of an assistant stand the propeller shaft on the floor with the splines upward and hold the propeller shaft body steady.
CAUTION:
Care is required during this operation to avoid breaking the drill bit.
^ Use of a high quality and properly sharpened 5 mm (13/64 in) High Speed Steel drill bit is required.
^ LUBRICATION OF THE DRILLING PROCESS WITH CUTTING OIL IS REQUIRED.
^ It is suggested that the cutting rate be limited to ensure that the drilling is completed in no less than 10 minutes.
^ During the later stages of drilling remove the drill bit from the hole regularly to empty swarf out of the drill bit flutes. This will also minimize the risk of drill bit breakage.
7. Starting in the existing pilot hole (D in Figure 5), drill a 5 mm (13/64 in) through hole into the propeller shaft tube cavity - approximately 65 mm (2.5 in).
8. Remove the masking tape and wash the drilled propeller shaft end in solvent to remove any metal particles or debris.
9. Dry and carefully inspect for any residue. If residue is found, remove it.
