2003 Range Rover Steering Column Tilt Jam
IMPORTANT NOTE:
^ The action outlined in this Technical Alert is a temporary measure to resolve the problem until modified tilt adjustment motors become available. A Technical Information Bulletin will be issued when components and procedures have been finalized.
^ Because the modified motor is REQUIRED to resolve the problem, column replacement using current stocks is not guaranteed to resolve the issue.
^ If a complete steering column has already been ordered for a vehicle with the tilt motor complaint, the order should be cancelled and the procedure below should be followed.
Situation
At the extremes of tilt travel the tilt adjustment motor spindle can move laterally within its bearing. This movement can cause the tilt adjustment system to jam.
Resolution
Slackening the tension on the jammed adjustment spindle will restore functionality.
Repair Procedure
1. Adjust Drivers seat to its most rearward position.
2. Using T20 Torx bit and extended Torx bit driver, remove 3 lower column cowl fasteners and remove column cowl for access.
NOTE:
The tilt adjustment spindle is located on the underside of the steering column. Figure 1 shows the layout of the components.
3. Position a 13 mm box end wrench onto the nyloc spindle nut at the back of the housing (Figure 2).
4. Rotate the nyloc nut exactly half a turn counterclockwise (as observed from the end of the shaft) to release the mechanism.
5. Using the adjustment lever, verify that tilt adjustment functionality has been restored.
6. Mark the Spindle Housing with a spot of white paint in the area shown in Figure 2, to indicate that this procedure has been carried out.
7. Install the column cowl.
8. Record the procedure and vehicle VIN on the Repair Order.
