SERVICE ACTION
Software Adjustment to ECM
Thermostat Parameters
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
Range Rover (LM)
3A101029 to 4A164734
SITUATION:
RADIATOR TUBE CRACKING
The software calibration applied in production to the electric thermostat could lead to cracking of the radiator tubing causing a coolant leak.
RESOLUTION:
REVISE THERMOSTAT CALIBRATION
All vehicles in the above VIN range should have new engine management software programmed to recalibrate the electric thermostat. The revised calibration files are to be downloaded using the latest 14 disc "Range Rover 14" or later.
Because Land Rover wishes to implement this correction pro-actively, An Owner notification will be sent to all owners of affected vehicles informing them of the need to have the vehicle management software updated. Refer to Service Bulletin SGIO5-O1.

*NOTE:
The VIN range for Emissions Label replacement is shorter than the total VIN range for this Service Action. After VIN 4A152498 the label does not need to be changed.
DDW WARRANTY CLAIMS:
Warranty claims should be submitted quoting the program code and option from the table in place of the normal warranty complaint code. This will result in payment of the stated time and, where applicable parts/miscellaneous expense. The SRO is provided for information only.
Drive in/drive out should only be claimed when the vehicle is brought back into the workshop for this action alone to be undertaken.
Normal warranty policy and procedures apply. Material allowance is included in labor operation.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
ELECTRIC THERMOSTAT SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD
1. Connect 14 to the vehicle.
NOTE:
The battery must be capable of maintaining a full charge during this process. The required time is expected to be 15-18 minutes total.
2. Verify the battery is fully charged (12.6 V or greater).
3. Connect a battery charger set on a low amp current charge to maintain battery state during this process.
4. Insert Range Rover 14 or later into 14 and begin a new diagnostic session.
5. Observe all on-screen instructions to perform the following steps:
^ Select "System Diagnostics".
^ Select "Engine Management".
NOTE:
The Assembly Number will be the next to last list item displayed and will begin with the letters NNW.
^ When 14 displays the "ECM TYPE" information screen, determine if the Assembly Number is "NNW503530."
^ Note the displayed Assembly Number on paper for reference.
6. If the "NNW503530" Assembly Number is displayed, no programming is required.
^ Select "Abort" on this screen
^ Go to step 9.
7. If any Assembly Number other than "NNW503530" is shown perform the following:
^ Select "Continue" to program the ECM.
^ Select "Vehicle Maintenance".
^ Select "ECU Checks and Renewal".
If prompted to update the engine ECM software, select "Select Fix".
CAUTION:
T4 will display the "ABOUT TO PROGRAM ECM" screen with full details of the tune download. You MUST confirm that T4 has selected the correct ECM software for this campaign, and displays "NNW503530" as the Assembly Number on this screen.
CAUTION:
You must contact Land Rover Technical HelpLine for assistance to complete this campaign if either of the following conditions occur:
^ If T4 selects a different Assembly Number than "NNW503530" to be downloaded.
^ If T4 does NOT prompt you to update the engine ECM software, and you are certain the Assembly Number displayed in step 5 on the "ECM TYPE" screen was not "NNW503530."
^ If the Assembly Number "NNW503530" is displayed, select Continue, and observe the on-screen progress indicator.
Wait for the software to be fully downloaded. (This should take approximately 15 minutes)
8. When all software down load activity is completed, end the diagnostic session and return to the "Welcome" screen.
9. Disconnect 14 and the battery charger from the vehicle.
10. Remove the factory-installed vacuum routing label from the vehicle under repair. (Figure 1)
11. Carefully clean the area from which the label was removed of old adhesive and other residue.
*NOTE:
The VIN range for Emissions Label replacement is shorter than the total VIN range for this Service Action. After VIN 4A152498 the label does not need to be changed.
12. If the vehicle VIN is before 4A524498, install the appropriate emissions label for the vehicle model year:
^ BAC500770 for MY 2003
^ BAC500780 for MY 2004
