Front Steering Knuckle: Service and Repair
Steering Knuckle
Service Repair No - 60.15.19
Remove
1. Raise front of vehicle.
WARNING: Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by one jack. Always support the vehicle with safety stands.
2. Remove front road wheel.
3. Remove front brake disc.
4. Remove Allen bolt and ABS sensor from wheel hub. Remove and discard O-ring from ABS sensor.
5. Remove 4 bolts securing wheel hub to steering knuckle.
6. Release wheel hub from steering knuckle, then remove wheel hub and drive shaft assembly from axle.
7. Remove 3 bolts securing mudshield and remove mudshield.
8. Remove 2 nuts securing track rod and (if applicable) drag link to steering knuckle.
9. Break taper joints using LRT-57-036, then position track rod and drag link aside.
10. Remove 2 nuts securing ball joints to steering knuckle.
11. Break taper joints using LRT-54-018 and remove steering knuckle.
12. Remove tension collet from steering knuckle.
13. Remove drive shaft oil seal from axle casing.
Refit
1. Clean drive shaft oil seal recess in axle casing.
2. Lubricate lip of new drive shaft oil seal with clean differential oil.
3. Use LRT-51-006 to fit drive shaft oil seal to axle casing.
4. Clean taper bores in steering knuckle and tension collet.
5. Fit tension collet into steering knuckle and tighten to 5 Nm (3.7 ft. lbs.).
6. Clean ball joint tapers and taper seats. Position steering knuckle to axle yoke. Fit upper ball joint nut and tighten to 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.).
7. Fit lower ball joint nut and tighten to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
8. Clean track rod and (if applicable) drag link tapers and taper seats.
9. Connect track rod and drag link to steering knuckle. Fit track rod and drag link nuts and tighten to 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.).
10. Clean mudshield and steering knuckle mating faces. Position mudshield, fit bolts and tighten to 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.).
11. Clean drive shaft oil seal running surface, wheel hub and steering knuckle mating faces, ABS sensor and sensor recess.
12. Apply anti-seize compound to wheel hub and steering knuckle mating faces.
13. Ensure ABS sensor harness is located in cutout in steering knuckle. Fit drive shaft and wheel hub assembly to axle.
14. Fit wheel hub bolts and tighten to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.).
15. Fit new O-ring on ABS sensor and fit ABS sensor to wheel hub. Fit ABS sensor Allen bolt and tighten to 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).
16. Fit front brake disc.
17. Fit front road wheel and tighten nuts to 140 Nm (103 ft. lbs.).
18. Remove stand(s) and lower vehicle.
