Parking Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

NOTE: Numbers in parentheses ( ) below refer to numbers in the illustration.

REMOVAL
1. Park vehicle on level ground, chock road wheels and release park brake. Alternatively, raise vehicle on a ramp.
2. Disconnect rear propeller shaft from transmission output flange at brake drum.
3. Loosen transmission brake drum adjustment bolt (15).
4. Remove single bolt (9) securing brake drum to output flange.
5. Withdraw drum (8) to expose brake assembly.
6. Release top (23) and bottom (13) springs from brake shoes.
7. Grip dished washer (7) with a pair of pliers or suitable removal tool, depress washer and turn through 90°.
8. Remove dished washer (7), with hold down spring (6) and pin (17) from both shoes.
9. Move brake shoes (4 and 18) out from adjuster slides (11 and 14), release from abutment plate (21) and remove from backing plate (22).
10. Disconnect RH shoe (4) from brake cable (10).
11. Check that springs are satisfactory for continued use.

NOTE: If new brake shoes are to be installed, the springs should also be replaced.

INSTALLATION
1. Locate RH brake shoe (4) in slide (11), connect brake cable (10) and secure brake shoe and lever assembly to backing plate with hold down pin (17), spring (6) and dished washer (7).
2. Locate LH brake shoe (18) in slide (14) and install abutment plate (21) between both brake shoes.
3. Secure LH shoe with hold down pin (17), spring (17) and dished washer (16).
4. Install pull-off springs (13 and 23) to brake shoes.
5. Install brake drum (8), then tighten bolt (9) to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
6. Check that park brake lever is released.
7. Screw in and tighten adjuster bolt (15) until brake drum will not rotate by hand.
8. Tighten adjuster bolt to 25 Nm 18 ft. lbs.) to ensure brake drum is locked.
9. Slacken off adjuster bolt by 1/2 turns until shoes have a running clearance.
10. Check that the drum is free to rotate.
11. Install propeller shaft to output flange, then tighten to 46 Nm (34 ft. lbs.).
