Parking Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

WARNING: Do not remove dust from brake assembly with compressed air. Dust from brake linings can be a serious health risk if inhaled.

NOTE: Numbers in the illustrations correspond to step numbers in the removal procedure.

REMOVAL
1. Position vehicle on a suitable lifting device.
2. Release hand brake, then raise and support vehicle.






3. Remove four bolts securing propshaft guard, then remove guard.
4. Mark propeller shaft flange and brake drum to aid reassembly.
5. Raise one rear wheel to allow rotation of propeller shaft.
6. Remove four nuts securing shaft to drum, then release shaft and secure aside.
7. Remove screw securing drum to drive flange, then remove drum.






8. Remove two washers, springs and pins retaining brake shoes to backplate.
9. Remove brake shoe. Collect pull off springs and abutment plate. Release remaining shoe from brake cable.
10. Remove adjuster plungers.
11. Remove C-clip securing cable lever to shoe. Remove flat washer, two bellville washers and pivot pin.
12. Clean components with aerosol brake cleaner. Allow to dry. Examine components for wear and replace as necessary.

INSTALLATION
1. Install adjuster plungers. Apply grease to cable lever pivot pin.
2. Fit pivot pin to shoe.
3. Fit two bellville washers, cable lever and flat washer. Secure with C-clip.
4. Fit shoe to brake cable, aligning to backplate and adjuster. Secure shoe to backplate with pin, spring and washer.
5. Fit abutment plate to shoe.
6. Connect pull off springs to remaining shoe. Secure shoe to backplate with pin, spring and washer.
7. Install brake drum. Secure with screw.
8. Install propeller shaft on brake drum. Align marks and secure with bolts. Tighten to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
9. Install rear propeller shaft guard. Secure with bolts.

11. Lower vehicle carefully.
