Suspension - EAS System Fails to Rise

17/3/95

60/01/95/US

SUBJECT:
EAS Compressor Brush "Hang Up"

MODEL:
Range Rover Classic

AFFECTED VEHICLES:
EAS derivatives from LH 624756 to LH 649520

DETAIL

From the introduction of the air suspension system on Range Rover Classic, information has been monitored on the level of service returns on specific components. Analysis of the compressor returns highlighted that the main cause of failure was associated with the brush card assembly of the compressor. The most frequent compressor failure is that the vehicle will fail to rise off the bump stops and on investigation it was found that the compressor was subject to intermittent operation. The compressor can sometimes be restarted by applying a shock load to the compressor case which ultimately identified that the armature brushes were sticking in their boxes. During cold spells in particular. the clearance between brush and brush box can be dramatically reduced. Design changes have been introduced to the compressor to increase brush clearance which will benefit the customer by providing increased reliability and durability.

ACTION REQUIRED

On customer complaint of the system failing to rise, replace the compressor.
