Replacement Battery Installation

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

RANGE ROVER CLASSIC (LH) All

SITUATION:

INTERSTATE BATTERY REPLACEMENT

Interstate batteries have replaced Lucas Yuasa batteries for use in Range Rover Classic vehicles.

RESOLUTION:

INTRODUCTION OF NEW REPLACEMENT BATTERY

Effective upon depletion of existing stocks of the Lucas Yuasa battery, the Interstate battery MT-34 is the officially recognized Land Rover replacement battery for all Range Rover Classic vehicles. To ensure proper location and retention of this battery, a spacer must be positioned inside the original equipment hold-down clamp on the Range Rover Classic.

Tile short J-bolt removed from the OEM clamp on 1987-94 vehicles may be used in the installation of the revised battery clamp if it is in good condition.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

INSTALLATION

1987-1994 Model Year

CAUTION:
Always disconnect the negative battery terminal first during battery removal. Accidental contact of a wrench to any grounded metal part could cause a severe spark and possibly result in personal injury.

1. Starting with the negative side, disconnect battery terminals.

2. Remove the old battery and clamping device.





3. Drill a 3/8-inch hole in the radiator support as shown in Figure 1.

4. Rust protect exposed surfaces at drilled hole with RTC7769/25.

NOTE:
Old hold down clamp must be replaced with spacer and new style clamp.





5. Insert the spacer (AMR3679S) into the new battery hold down clamp (AMR3679), and position clamp and spacer on top of battery as in Figure 2.

6. Position the hold down clamp and secure with J-bolts using the original hole for the rear and the new 318-inch hole to anchor the front.

7. Tighten the J-bolts nuts as follows:

^ Lower hold down nut to 1.4 Nm (12 lbf.in.).

^ Upper lock nut to 7-10 Nm (62-90 lbf.in.).

8. Starting with positive side, install the battery cables.

9. Torque the terminal clamp bolts to 5.4-6.7 Nm (48-60 lbf.in.).

1995 Model Year Only

1. Starting with the negative side, disconnect battery cables.

2. Remove the four nuts that secure the battery clamp.

3. Remove the clamp and the battery.

4. Position new Interstate MT-34 battery in the vehicle.

5. Install spacer into battery clamp (Figure 2).

6. Secure battery clamp and spacer with the four nuts.

7. Starting with positive side, install the battery cables.

8. Torque the terminal clamp bolts to 5.4-6.7 Nm (48-60 lbf.in.).
