Steering Column: Service and Repair

NOTE: The steering column is a non serviceable component and can only be replaced as a complete assembly.

REMOVAL
1. Loosen clip securing air inlet hose to Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.
2. Loosen clip securing air inlet hose to plenum chamber.
3. Remove air inlet hose.





4. Mark relationship of top universal joint to steering column (4) and shaft.
5. Remove 2 bolts (5) from top universal joint.
6. Remove steering shaft top universal joint (6).
7. Remove center cap from steering wheel.
8. Remove nut securing steering wheel to column and collect washer.
9. Using removal tools No. LRT-57-014 and LRT-57-015, or equivalents, remove steeling wheel from column.
10. Disconnect battery negative lead.
11. Remove instrument panel, refer to Instrument Panel Gauges and Warning Indicators.





12. Remove 7 screws (12) securing nacelle to steering column.
13. Remove top half of nacelle.
14. Release bottom half of nacelle (14) from indicator and light stalk grommets and remove.





15. Remove bolt (15) securing steering column to upper mounting bracket.





16. Remove 2 lower bolts (16) securing steering column to body.
17. Remove 2 upper clamping bolts (17) and collect clamp and rubber.
18. Release harness (18) from clip on column upper mounting bracket.
19. Release clip (19) from column upper mounting bracket.
20. Remove 4 bolts (20) securing column upper mounting bracket.
21. Remove upper mounting bracket.





22. Disconnect 3 multiplugs (22) from rear of switch pack.
23. Loosen screw (23) and remove switch pack.





24. Disconnect multiplug and 6 Lucars (24) from ignition switch.

NOTE: Note the positions of the Lucar connections to the ignition switch.

25. Drill out 2 shear bolts (25) securing ignition barrel to steering column.
26. Remove ignition barrel (26) and collect washers.
27. Remove brake pedal, refer to Brakes and Traction Control.
28. Remove steering column and upper mounting bracket from vehicle.

INSTALLATION
1. Manoeuver steering column into position in vehicle.
2. Install brake pedal.
3. Position ignition barrel (26) to steering column and rotate inner shaft to line up slot with barrel plunger.
4. Position barrel clamp to steering column and secure with shear bolts (25).
- Evenly tighten bolts, but do not shear them.
5. Temporarily install steering wheel and operate switch and lock mechanism several times to ensure it functions correctly.
6. Fully tighten ignition barrel bolts (25) until heads shear.
7. Connect multiplug (24) and Lucars to ignition barrel (26).
8. Install switch pack to steering column and secure with screw (23).
9. Connect multiplugs (22) to rear of switch pack.
10. Position column upper mounting bracket (21) and tighten bolts (20) to: 22 Nm, (16 ft. lbs.).
11. Install clip (19) to mounting bracket and secure harness.
12. Install rubber and clamp to upper steering column.
13. Install clamp bolts (17) and tighten to: 22 Nm, (16 ft. lbs.).
14. Install lower steering column bolts (16) and tighten to: 22 Nm (16 ft. lbs.).
15. Install bolt (15) securing column to upper mounting bracket and tighten to: 22 Nm, (16 ft. lbs.).
16. Install lower half of steering column nacelle (14) and secure to stalk grommets.
17. Install top half of steering column nacelle.
18. Install and tighten screws (12) securing nacelle to steering column.
19. Install instrument panel.
20. Reconnect battery negative lead.
21. Position indicator cancelling ring so that slots are vertical and lug with arrow points to the left.
22. Install steering wheel with finisher attachment lug at bottom, ensuring indicator cancelling forks locate in ring slots.
23. Install new washer and tighten securing nut to: 50 Nm, (37 ft. lbs.).
24. Install center cap to steering wheel.
25. With steering lock engaged, and wheels in straight ahead position, align assembly marks (4) and connect steering shaft universal joint (6) to steering column.
26. Tighten universal joint pinch bolts (5) to: 25 Nm, (18 ft. lbs.).
27. Install air inlet hose between plenum chamber and MAF sensor and tighten clips.
