Replacement Battery Installation

SITUATION:

INTERSTATE BATTERY REPLACEMENT

Interstate batteries have replaced Lucas Yuasa batteries for use in Defender vehicles.

RESOLUTION:

INTRODUCTION OF NEW REPLACEMENT BATTERY

Effective upon depletion of existing stocks of the Lucas Yuasa battery the Interstate battery 29H-VHD is the officially recognized Land Rover replacement battery for all Defender vehicles.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

INSTALLATION

CAUTION:
Always disconnect the negative battery terminal first during battery removal. Accidental contact of wrench to any grounded metal part could cause a severe spark and possibly result in personal injury.

1. Remove the old battery.

2. Position the new Interstate battery so that the terminals are closest to the center of the vehicle.

3. Place the battery in the vehicle and push as far forward as possible.

4. Secure the battery in position and tighten clamps as follows:

^ Tighten the lower hold down J-bolt nut to 1-1.5 Nm (8.9-13 lbf.in.).

^ Tighten the upper lock J-bolt nut to 7-10 Nm (62-90 lbf.in.).

NOTE:
Install positive battery cable first and note that terminal location is reversed on the Interstate battery.

5. Route the positive cable to the rear (+) post and the negative battery cable to the front (-) post.

6. Torque the cable clamp bolts to 5.4-6.7 Nm (48-60 lbf.in.).

7. Ensure that the positive battery terminal cover is in place and properly installed.

8. Install the steel panel over the battery compartment.
