Emergency Procedures

Vehicle fire
Use standard fire extinguishing procedures. Any type of fire fighting agent may be used, including water.

The airbag module is designed to self-deploy if internal temperatures exceed 150 °C. The propellant will rapidly burn without fragmentation of the inflator. An airbag will not explode.

Rescue with deployed airbag
1. Use normal rescue procedures immediately, do not delay medical attention.
2. Wear gloves and eye protection normally used for rescue. The surface of the airbag and vehicle interior may be coated with a powdery residue which is mainly talcum powder.
3. The powdery residue may be slightly alkaline and irritate the skin and eyes. It is not hazardous but avoid introducing it into the eyes or mouth or into any wounds.
4. Reassure occupants that smoke produced from the deployed airbag is normal and may continue for up to several minutes after deployment; it is not indicative of fire.
5. Be aware of hot components underneath the airbag fabric. These components are located inside the airbag module and may remain hot for up to 15 minutes after deployment.
6. Push a deflated airbag away, it should not be necessary to cover or cut away a deployed airbag.
7. On completion of a rescue operation, brush off or change any clothing coated with airbag residue. This should not delay medical treatment.
The residue may be alkaline:
Eye contact- irrigate with water.
Skin contact - wash affected areas with soap and water.
If gloves were not worn, wash hands after handling a deployed airbag.

Rescue with airbag not deployed
1. Use normal rescue procedures immediately, do not delay medical attention.
2. Perform the rescue from the side of the occupant and away from the potential deployment path of any airbag.
3. Determine whether the vehicle is fitted with any airbag modules. Look for 'SRS' identifying labels: on driver's sun visor, bonnet lock platform. Also 'SRS' symbol on steering wheel pad and passenger's side dash pad and on the face of the tachometer.
4. Switch off the ignition and then disconnect both battery leads, negative '-' first.

WARNING: The airbag system is fitted with a device which will continue to power the unit for up to 20 minutes after being switched off. The following precautions should be followed at all times.

5. DO NOT place your body or objects against an airbag module.
6. DO NOT cut or drill directly into an undeployed airbag module or attempt to take the unit apart. If an airbag module has ruptured, Do Not touch exposed chemicals.
7. DO NOT cut or drill into the steering column or airbag modules. The steering wheel rim maybe cut to facilitate rescue.
8. DO NOT strike or drill into an airbag module.
9. DO NOT cut the airbag module wiring, enclosed in a YELLOW sheath.
10. DO NOT attempt to initiate deployment of any airbag.
