DETAIL

All 1997 Defender models built within the chassis range above have incorrectly wired rear speakers. When wired incorrectly, the left and right speakers have no separation

PARTS INFORMATION

No spare parts are required.

PROCEDURE

Perform the following diagnostic procedure

1. Tune radio to a strong station.

2. Set radio controls to the right rear speaker as follows:

^ Set fader control fully to the rear

^ Set balance control fully to the right

3. If sound is heard from the right rear speaker ONLY, wiring is correct and no further action is required.

If during the above test, sound was heard from BOTH rear speakers, perform the following repair:

1. Raise the vehicle and locate mating connectors C393 and C379. (See 1997 Electrical Library)

2. Disconnect connectors and feed connector C393 over the right chassis rail to gain access.

1. Swap terminals is cavities 3 and 4 of C393 so that black/brown wire is in cavity 3 and black/blue wire is in cavity 4. See illustration -

2. When wires are correct, feed connector C393 back to C379 and connect.

CAUTION:
Verify that reconnected wiring is clear of exhaust system and drift shaft.

5. Use radio balance and fader controls to confirm correct operation of both left and right rear speakers.
