A/C - Water Sloshing Sound From Heater

No: 80/02/01/NAS
Ref:
Issue: 1
Date: 06/22/01

Heater System Drain Contamination

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

Defender (LD) All

SITUATION:

SOUND OF WATER MOVEMENT IN HEATER

A Defender customer may hear the sound of water movement when driving. The customer may also complain that in high humidity and temperature conditions the heater system can be required to defog the windshield. Water that has been trapped in the heater intake plenum because the intake drain valve is "stuck" shut or blocked can cause either symptom.

RESOLUTION:

CLEAN VENT AND REMOVE DEBRIS

The surface of the valve can become coated by engine compartment contaminants reducing its flexibility. The valve may also be blocked with debris from the inside. Clean the drain and remove the blockage to ensure free water drainage.

PARTS INFORMATION:

No parts involved.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

CLEAN DRAIN FOR PROPER OPERATION

NOTE:
The heater fresh air intake is situated in the passenger side front fender. Below the intake grill, within the engine compartment, is a molded duct. This duct incorporates the water drain valve. (Figure 1)

1. Access the drain valve and squeeze the valve by hand.

2. If water drains out, clean the surface of the valve with a degreasing agent.

3. Remove the upper grill and ensure no debris or foreign material is lodged in the drain.

4. Pour a small quantity of water through the air intake to confirm satisfactory operation of the valve. Water must drain through the valve unaided.
