Battery Label Recall - D452, NHTSA # 96V-108

An issue regarding non-compliance with a labeling regulation exists in 1993 through 1995 model year Land Rover Defender vehicles imported by Land Rover North America, Inc.

DESCRIPTION OF NON-COMPLIANCE

Land Rover has identified a number of vehicles that were built without the proper warning label affixed to the battery. This label contains important information concerning the inherent dangers related to the acid contained within the battery and the care that must be taken when working on or around batteries.

VEHICLES INVOLVED/CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

U.S. and Canadian 1993 through 1995 Land Rover Defender vehicles within VIN range PA919935 to SA981838 are involved in this recall action.

Customer notification will be sent from Land Rover to customers beginning August 9, 1996. A sample of the customer notification letter is included.

STATUS CHECKING

You may check the disposition of any vehicle using the Land Rover DCS terminal - Warranty Recall/Search screen.

After completing the recall work, please annotate the Service Action Record located in the back of the Passport to Service booklet. In order to properly update our records, if you check the battery and find that the label was installed by the customer, please submit a warranty claim to verify that the label is affixed to the battery.

WORK PROCEDURES

The letter sent to all customers includes a new battery label and installation instructions. However, since we know that certain customers will not want to install the labels themselves, we have offered them the option of having you install the label for them. Installation instructions are contained in the enclosed Technical Information Bulletin.

PARTS SUPPLY

Labels will be sent directly to owners. In addition, a supplemental supply of labels will be provided directly to you at no charge. If additional labels are needed, please contact Patti Shoap at 301-731-8112.
