Repair Procedure

REPLACE DRIVER SIDE SWIVEL PIN HOUSING OIL SEAL (60.15.40)

1. Raise front of vehicle.

2. Remove road wheel.





3. Remove the split pin and the nut securing the drag link to the swivel hub. (Figure 1)





4. Using Land Rover special tool LRT-57018, break the taper joint and release the drag link from the swivel hub. (Figure 2)





5. Remove the split pin and the nut securing the track rod to the swivel hub. (Figure 3)





6. Using Land Rover special tool LRT-57018, break the taper joint and release the track rod from the swivel hub. (Figure 4)

CAUTION:
An approved brake hose clamp must be used.





7. Clamp the brake hose to prevent fluid loss. (Figure 5)

CAUTION:
Care must be taken to avoid damage to the brake pipes.

NOTE:
A container should be placed beneath vehicle to collect any spillage.





8. Using two wrenches, disconnect the union securing the brake caliper pipe to the brake hose. (Figure 6)





9. Remove the brake hose locknut, release the hose from the bracket and secure aside. (Figure 7)

NOTE:
Note the position of the steering lock stop bracket before removal.





10. Remove the seven bolts securing the hub to the axle. (Figure 8)

11. With assistance, remove the hub assembly.

12. Discard the gasket.





13. Remove the six bolts securing the swivel seal retaining plate and remove the swivel plate. (Figure 9)





14. Remove the swivel seal from the hub assembly. (Figure 10)

15. Clean the swivel and hub to ensure the surfaces are free from dirt and grease.

16. Clean the swivel retaining plate mating faces.

17. Clean the hub and axle flange mating faces.

INSTALL

18. Ensure seal location is clean and insert a new swivel seal in to the hub.

19. Install the swivel seal retaining plate, install the bolts and tighten to 11 Nm (8 lbf-ft).

20. Apply a film of silicone sealant to the axle flange to aid location of the gasket and install a new gasket to the axle mounting face.

NOTE:
The steering lock stop bracket must be mounted back in the original position.

21. With assistance, position the hub assembly and tighten the hub to axle bolts to 100 Nm (74 lbf-ft).

22. Position the brake hose to the hub mounting bracket, install the lock nut and using two wrenches tighten the lock nut to 15 Nm (11 lbf-ft).

23. Connect the brake pipe to the brake hose and tighten the union nut to 15 Nm (11 lbf-ft).

24. Remove the clamp from the brake hose.

25. Remove the swivel housing filling plug and add approved swivel housing grease.

26. Install the filling plug.

27. Install the drag link to hub, tighten the nut to 40 Nm (30 lbf-ft) and install a split pin to secure the nut.

28. Install the track rod, tighten the nut to 40 Nm (30 lbf-ft) and install a split pin to secure the nut.

CAUTION:
Use only new brake fluid of the recommended grade. Brake fluid will damage paint finished surfaces. If spilled, immediately remove/clean area with water.

NOTE:
Ensure the fluid in the reservoir is maintained between the minimum and maximum levels throughout the bleed procedure using new brake fluid.

29. Bleed the brake system.

30. Clean the area surrounding the brake caliper bleed nipple and the flexible connection hose to hub mounting bracket.

31. Install the road wheel and tighten the wheel nuts to 140 Nm (103 lbf-ft).

32. Lower the front of the vehicle and check/top-up the brake fluid reservoir as necessary.

REPLACE PASSENGER SIDE SWIVEL PIN HOUSING OIL SEAL (60.15.41)

1. Raise front of vehicle.

2. Remove road wheel.





3. Remove the split pin and the nut securing the track rod to the swivel hub. (Figure 11)





4. Using Land Rover special tool LRT-57-018, break the taper joint and release the track rod from the swivel hub. (Figure 12)

CAUTION:
An approved brake hose clamp must be used.





5. Clamp the brake hose to prevent fluid loss. (Figure 13)

CAUTION:
Care must be taken to avoid damage to the brake pipes.

NOTE:
Place a container beneath vehicle to collect any spillage.

23. Remove the swivel housing filling plug and add approved swivel housing grease.

24. Refit filling plug.

25. Install the track rod, tighten nut to 40 Nm (30 lbf-ft) and install a split pin to secure the nut.
