Drive Belt: Adjustments

WARNING:
Do not attempt to check belt tension or make belt adjustments with the engine running. Serious injury could result.

Disconnect the vehicle battery before checking or adjusting any of the drive belts, to prevent the possibility of personal injury if the engine is started
.

DRIVING BELT ARRANGEMENT.

1. Air conditioning compressor (if fitted)
2. Idler pulley
3. Viscous fan water pump unit
4. Idler pulley
5. Crankshaft
6. Power steering pump
7. Alternator

DRIVING BELT TENSION.
Each belt should be tight enough to drive without undue strain on bearings. Using moderate finger pressure at the points indicated in the illustrations each belt should not deflect more than 0.19 to 0.25 in (4 to 6 mm). Deflection beyond this limit indicates belt looseness which may cause a loud whining or knocking noise in operation and intermittent drive.

VISCOUS FAN/WATER PUMP BELT ADJUSTMENT.

Loosen the idler pulley securing bolt (1) and adjust the pulley (2) position until the correct tension is obtained. Tighten the securing bolt and re-check the deflection.

ALTERNATOR AND POWER STEERING PUMP DRIVE BELT ADJUSTMENT.

1. Alternator drive belt
2. Steering pump drive belt
3. Guide pulley
4. Alternator drive belt tensioner

An additional pulley, bolted to the front of the steering pump pulley, is used as a guide for the alternator drive belt. Before adjustment of the steering pump belt is carried out, the alternator belt must be loosened to facilitate accurate adjustment. Before adjusting the alternator drive belt ensure the steering pump belt is correctly adjusted.

POWER STEERING PUMP DRIVE BELT.

NOTE: Before adjusting the steering pump belt, the alternator drive belt must be loosened.

Loosen steering pump pivot nut (1) and adjustment bolt (1).
Ensure pump (2) is free to rotate on mounting, loosen fixings further if necessary.
Carefully lever power steering pump bracket to tension the drive belt.

CAUTION: Do not lever against the steering pump casing - damage to the casing may result in oil leaks.

Tighten pivot nut and adjustment bolt. Tension alternator drive belt.

ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT.

NOTE: Before adjusting the alternator drive belt ensure the steering pump belt is correctly adjusted.

A positive drive tensioner is fitted to provide greater accuracy when setting the alternator drive belt.
The tensioner eliminates the need to lever alternator when adjusting belt tension.

Adjustment:
Loosen alternator pivot and bolt (1) securing alternator to tensioner.
Loosen two tensioner nuts (2) and bolt (2) securing tensioner to water pump bracket.
Rotate tensioner lead screw (3) to adjust drive belt tension.
Tighten alternator pivot bolts and tensioner nuts and bolt.
If fitting a new belt, run the engine at fast idle for 3-5 minutes, then stop the engine and re-check the deflection.

AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR DRIVE BELT - OPTIONAL.

The belt must be tight with not more than 0.19 to 0.25 in (4 to 6 mm) total deflection when checked by hand mid-way between the pulleys on the longest run.

Where a belt has stretched beyond the limits a noisy whine or knock will often be evident during operation.

If Necessary Adjust As Follows:
Loosen the idler pulley securing bolt (1) and adjust the pulley (2) position until the correct tension is obtained. Tighten the securing bolt and re-check the deflection.
