Old Ball Joint: NTC4260

Diagnostic Procedure

Customer complaints of a "creaking/crunching/groaning" type noise from the rear of the vehicle when going over speed bumps or rough surfaces can indicate a worn "A" frame ball joint.

With the vehicle on the hoist, parking brake on and transmission in Park or gear (Defender), have an assistant rock the rear of the vehicle up and down on its suspension. Using a stethoscope listen for the source of the noise. Remember that similar noises can also come from:

^ The load leveller ball joints

^ Floor reinforcement clevis pins/eye bolts (see Service Bulletin P92-008).

NOTE:
The load leveller ball joints may be dismantled, cleaned and repacked, see the Workshop Manual, Section 64.

REPAIR INFORMATION

Refer to Section 64 of the Workshop Manual for replacement procedures and torque values. The "A" frame ball joint is sealed and non-serviceable.
