WORK PROCEDURE

Customer complaints of a "creaking/crunching/groaning/clunking" type noise from the rear of the vehicle when going over speed bumps or rough surfaces can be caused by the rear "A" frame ball joint.

1. With the vehicle on the hoist, parking brake on and transmission in Park or Gear (Defender), have an assistant rock the rear of the vehicle up and down on its suspension. Using a stethoscope listen for the source of the noise. Remember that similar noises can also come from the following:

^ The load leveler ball joints

^ Floor reinforcement clevis pins/eye bolts (see Service Bulletin P92-008).

NOTE:
The load leveler ball joints may be dismantled, cleaned and repacked. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 64.

2. Refer to Section 64 of the Workshop Manual for replacement procedures and torque values. The "A" frame ball joint is sealed and non-serviceable.
