Transmission Removal






PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable (first), then the positive battery cable.
2. To remove the air cleaner assembly, disconnect the hose from the intake manifold, the MAF sensor connector, and three mounting bolts.
3. Remove the two bolts and the battery hold down, then remove the battery.
4. Remove three bolts, one nut, and the battery tray.
5. Remove seven bolts (four to the body, three to the transaxle) and remove #4 engine mount
6. Remove one bolt and disconnect hydraulic hose support bracket from transaxle mount.
7. Disconnect the EGR to exhaust manifold nut.
8. Disconnect the two EGR to intake manifold bolts.
9. Disconnect the bolt from the EGR bracket and remove the EGR tube.
10. Disconnect back-up light connector.
11. Remove one bolt and back-up light connector support bracket.
12. Disconnect the ground strap from top of transaxle (one bolt).
13. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor connector from the right side of the transaxle.
14. Disconnect neutral position switch connector.





15. Remove the four transmission-to-engine mounting bolts (two top; two side).
16. Raise and properly support the vehicle.
17. Place a drain pan under the transaxle drain plug.
18. Remove the transaxle drain plug and allow the transaxle oil to fully drain.
19. Remove both front wheels
20. Remove the two driver's side wheel well splash shields (seven bolts).
21. Remove five bolts (two top, two bottom, one center) and intake support bracket.
22. Remove three starter bolts and pull the starter away.
23. Remove the four catalytic converter bolts (two front, two rear) and remove the catalytic converter.
24. Remove five engine oil pan to transaxle bolts.





25. Remove both the right and left tie rod ends from the steering knuckles by removing one cotter pin and one nut each.





26. Remove both stabilizer end links by removing two nuts, four washers, four bushings, one sleeve and one bolt from each side.
27. Remove the pinch bolt and nut from both right and left ball joints.





28. Disconnect the ball joints from the steering knuckles by prying them loose.





29. Remove three bolts and separate the joint shaft bearing support from the cylinder block.
30. Gently pry the left driveshaft and the right joint shaft from the transaxle.
31. Remove two nuts from the #2 engine mount-to-mounting member.
32. Remove two nuts from the #1 engine mount-to-mounting member.
33. Remove one bolt and nut and disconnect shift control rod from the transaxle.
34. Remove one nut and disconnect extension bar from the transaxle.





35. Support the engine with a transverse support bar.





36. Support the transaxle with a transaxle jack or suitable floor jack.
37. Remove the four engine mounting member-to-chassis bolts (two front) and nuts (two rear).
38. Remove four front engine mount (#2) bolts from transaxle.
39. Disconnect the clutch release cylinder from transaxle by removing the two bolts.
40. Slowly lower the drive train, allowing the transaxle to tilt toward the ground.
41. Gently separate the transaxle from the engine and pull the unit out through the wheel well.
