Tie Rod: Service and Repair






REMOVAL
Remove in the order shown in the figure, refer to REMOVAL NOTE.


REMOVAL NOTE:





Tie-Rod End
1. Pull out the cotter pin, and remove the nut.
2. Remove the tie-rod from the knuckle arm with the Special Service Tool (SST) (or equivalent).

NOTICE: Replace the nut temporarily so the screw thread does not become damaged.





Locknut
1. Mark the alignment of the tie-rod, the jamnut, and the tie-rod end, as shown.





Tie-Rod End
1. Secure the tie-rod end in a vise.
2. Place a chisel against the dust boot, holding it at the angle shown.
3. Carefully remove the boot, working around the boot.

NOTICE: Do not scar the area where the tie-rod seals to the dust boot.

INSTALLATION
Install in the reverse order of removal, refer to INSTALLATION NOTE.

INSTALLATION NOTE:





Tie-Rod End Boot
1. Put a small amount of grease into the new dust boot.
2. Install the dust boot onto the tie-rod end with the SST (or equivalent) and a press.
