Engine Controls - Repeat MIL ON/P0133 and P0139

SOURCE: Kia Technician Times

TITLE: DTC P0133 and P0139 Repair

APPLIES TO: 98-99 Sportage

SERVICE TIP:

CONDITION

Some 1998 and 1999 vehicles have experienced repeat occurrences of "Check Engine" light illumination with P0133 or P0139 codes stored in the ECU memory. Note: This repair is not for 1996, 1997 models.

CAUSE

High resistance in the ground circuit for the hot film element of the Mass Air Flow (MAF) meter caused by poor crimp connections at S195, S194, S107, and S198 (automatic transmissions only).

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Splice S195 is located in the MAF wiring harness approximately 10 inches from the MAF connector (photo #1), usually just below the intake air hose. Carefully open the harness and expose S195 (photo #2). Using a high wattage, or propane soldering iron, flow solder into the splice until the entire splice is covered in a uniform layer of solder. Retape the splice and wiring harness.

Next, remove the front passenger kick panel and Photo #3 expose G103 (see photo #3). Pull the carpet back and expose the ECU and the main wiring harness floor protector plate. Remove protector plate and locate the ground wires that run from the main wiring harness to G103.

Locate the bulges in the G103 ground wire harness (photo #4).

Remove the tape until S194, S107, and on vehicles with automatic transmissions S198 are exposed (photo #5). Solder the splices using the same technique as used for S195. Retape splices and harness.

Finally, remove the 6 mm bolt at G103 (photo #6). Clean lug and area around bolt hole with sandpaper to ensure good contact. Reinstall ground lug. Reinstall carpet and kickpanel.
