Trip Computer - Excessive Current Draw

Ignition Off Current Draw - Overhead Trip Computer
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO 1996 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN OVERHEAD TRIP COMPUTER AND BUILT BETWEEN MARCH 8 AND MARCH 24, 1996 (MDH 03-08-XX AND 03-24-XX)

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Excessive ignition off current draw may be present in the overhead trip computer compass circuit which can lead to a discharged battery if the vehicle is not operated for 10 to 12 days.
DIAGNOSIS:
1. Make sure that the 40 amp 10D fuse is installed in location # 15 in the [1][2]power distribution center.
2. Disconnect the under hood light.
3. Make sure that all lights and accessories are turned off, and that all doors are closed.
4. Wait two minutes to allow the body computer to enter the shut down mode.
5. Remove the IOD fuse from location # 15.
6. Connect a digital ammeter capable of reading between 1 and 100 milliamps between the two IOD fuse terminals and observe the reading. A normal reading is approximately 15 milliamps. If the reading is greater than 15 milliamps, (readings will usually be 40 to 50 milliamps if the overhead is defective), disconnect the overhead console and repeat the ammeter test. If the readings drop to approximately 15 milliamps, perform the repair procedure. If the readings are still above 15 milliamps, refer to the 1996 Grand Cherokee service manual, page 8A-9, for the 100 test procedure which involves isolating the draw by removing fuses until the current drops.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves replacing the overhead trip computer.
1. Record the preset radio stations and remove and isolate the battery negative cable.
2. Remove the overhead console from the roof panel.
3. Remove the trip computer from the console.
4. Install trip computer, P/N 56042177 onto the console.
5. Install the console to the roof panel.
6. Install the battery negative cable, set the clock and radio stations.
