Engine: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect cables from battery, remove battery and drain cooling system.
2. Mark position of hood hinges for installation reference, then disconnect electrical connector to hood lamp if equipped and remove hood.
3. Disconnect electrical connectors from alternator, ignition coil and distributor, oil pressure switch and starter motor, then separate CEC system engine harness connector.
NOTE:
Mark connectors for installation reference.

4. Disconnect quick disconnect fuel lines at fuel rail and return line. Remove fuel line bracket from intake manifold.
5. Remove air cleaner and disconnect engine ground strap.
6. Disconnect vacuum purge from canister, idle speed actuator connector, throttle cable and if equipped, speed control cable. Remove throttle cable from bracket.
7. Disconnect throttle rod at bellcrank, then disconnect oxygen sensor connector. Remove vacuum check valve from brake booster.
8. Disconnect coolant hoses from radiator, rear of intake manifold, thermostat housing and heater hoses.
9. Remove fan shroud and radiator mounting bolts, then the fan shroud and radiator assembly.
10. Remove fan and spacer or thermostatic clutch, as equipped.
11. Install 5/16 x 1/2 inch SAE bolt through fan pulley and thread into water pump in order to maintain pulley alignment as crankshaft is rotated.
12. On models with power steering, disconnect hoses from steering gear, drain fluid into suitable container, then plug hoses and open fittings.
13. Raise and support vehicle.
14. Remove oil filter, starter motor, flywheel housing cover and front motor mount through bolts.
15. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold, remove upper flywheel housing bolts and loosen lower bolts.
16. Remove engine shock damper bracket from sill, if equipped.
17. Lower vehicle and attach suitable lifting equipment to engine.
18. Raise engine off mounts, place suitable support under flywheel housing and remove lower flywheel housing to engine bolts.
19. Separate engine from flywheel housing and remove from vehicle.
20. Reverse procedure to install.
