Wiper Switch: Service and Repair


1980-83 CHEROKEE & WAGONEER & 1984-85 GRAND WAGONEER & J-10 & 20 TRUCK

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Locate small notch at base of switch knob, then insert a small screwdriver into notch to release knob from switch shaft.
3. Remove nut attaching front of switch to instrument panel.
4. Lower switch from rear of instrument panel, then disconnect electrical connector and remove switch.
5. Reverse procedure to install.

WRANGLER & 1986-87 GRAND WAGONEER

LESS TILT COLUMN

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove turn signal switch as described under "Turn Signal Switch, Replace."
3. Remove ignition lock as described under "Ignition Lock, Replace."
4. On models with tilt column, loosen column mounting bracket bolts approximately 3 to 4 turns, then disconnect wiper switch leads from steering column electrical connector using a drill bit or other suitable tool.
5. On all models, remove ignition and dimmer switches as described under "Ignition and Dimmer Switches, Replace."
6. On models less tilt steering column, proceed as follows:
a. Remove attaching screws, then remove housing and shroud assembly from steering column jacket.
b. Turn assembly over and remove housing to shroud attaching screws and separate.
c. Remove pivot screw from housing, then remove wiper switch.
7. On models with tilt steering column, proceed as follows:
a. Remove upper housing attaching screws, then remove upper housing.
b. Remove wiper switch side cover and dimmer switch operating cam.
c. Using a 1/8 inch diameter punch, press out wiper switch retaining pin and remove wiper switch.
8. Reverse procedure to install.
