Removal and Replacement

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION REMOVAL (4 WHEEL DRIVE)

1. Raise the vehicle.

2. Mark rear propeller shaft and yoke assembly alignment.

3. Disconnect rear propeller shaft from transfer case yoke. Secure shaft to frame with wire.

4. Remove inspection cover from converter housing.

5. Mark converter drive plate and converter for assembly alignment.

6. Remove bolts attaching converter drive plate.

NOTE: On DIESEL MODELS, remove left motor mount and starter to gain access to the converter drive plate bolts through the starter opening.

7. Support transmission/transfer case assembly using transmission jack. Retain transmission jack with safety chain.

8. Remove bolts attaching rear crossmember to transmission and side sill.

9. Disconnect exhaust pipe at converter.

10. Mark front propeller shaft for assembly reference.

11. Disconnect front propeller shaft at transfer case and secure shaft to frame or body using wire.

12. Lower transmission slightly and disconnect oil cooler lines. Cap the lines at transmission.

13. Disconnect backup light switch wire, speedometer cable, vacuum lines, and vent hose.

14. Disconnect transfer case and transmission linkage.

15. Remove bolts attaching transmission to engine.

16. Move transmission and converter rearward to clear crankshaft.

17. Hold converter in position and lower transmission assembly until converter housing clears engine.

18. Remove transfer case from transmission.

INSTALLATION

1. Install transfer case on transmission.

2. Rotate converter until pump drive slots in converter hub are vertical and carefully insert converter hub into pump. Be sure drive lugs of pump inner rotor are properly engaged.

3. Raise transmission and align converter with drive plate. Refer to assembly alignment marks.

4. Move transmission forward and into place.

5. Install two converter housing lower attaching bolts and tighten bolts to draw housing engine.

6. Install drive plate-to-converter attaching bolts.

7. Install remaining converter housing-to-engine attaching bolts.

NOTE: On DIESEL MODELS, install the converter attaching bolts through the starter opening and install starter and left motor mount.

8. Connect oil cooler lines.

9. Connect back up light switch wire, vent hose, and vacuum lines.

10. Connect transmission and transfer case linkage.

11. Connect front propeller shaft. Refer to alignment marks during removal.

12. Raise transmission and install rear crossmember.

13. Install speedometer cable install inspection cover. Connect exhaust pipe to converter.

14. Connect rear propeller shaft. Refer to alignment marks made during removal.

15. Fill transfer case to correct level with specified lubricant.

16. Lower vehicle.

17. Fill transmission to correct level. Refer to Fluid Level and Condition for refill procedure.
Procedures

18. Road test to check transmission for proper operation.
