Valve Body: Service and Repair

VALVE BODY

REMOVAL

1. Raise the vehicle.

2. Remove the oil pan and drain the fluid.

3. Loosen the clamp bolts and remove the throttle and manual valve control levers from the valve body shafts.

4. Remove the neutral switch from the case. Remove the valve body attaching screws.

5. Lower the valve body, pull the valve body forward to disengage the park lock rod, and remove the valve body.

NOTE: It may be necessary to rotate the output shaft before the park lock rod will clear the park sprag.

6. Remove the oil filter.

INSTALLATION

1. Clean all mating surfaces. Be sure burrs are removed from the transmission case and valve body steel plate surfaces.

2. Position the accumulator spring on the valve body.

3. Insert the park lock rod through the opening in the rear of the case.

4. Position the knob on the end of the lock rod against the reaction plug in the sprag and exert rearward pressure on the rod to move the rod past the sprag. Rotate the output shaft, if necessary.

5. Align and install the valve body. Install the attaching screws finger-tight only.

6. Install the neutral switch.

7. Move the manual valve (in the valve body) to the neutral position. Align the valve body as necessary to align the neutral finger of the manual lever with the neutral switch plunger.


8. Tighten the valve body attaching screws alternately and evenly with 11 Nm (100 in. lbs.) torque.


9. Install the oil filter. Tighten the attaching screws with 4 Nm (35 in. lbs.) torque.

10. Install the manual and throttle valve control levers and tighten the clamp bolts. Check both shafts for binding after tightening the bolts.

11. Install the oil pan and the replacement gasket. Tighten the oil pan bolts with 17 Nm (150 in. lbs.) torque.

12. Lower the vehicle.

13. Fill the transmission with AMC/Jeep/Renault or equivalent Dexron II Automatic Transmission Fluid. Refer to Fluid Level and Condition for the refill procedure.
Procedures

14. Adjust the gearshift and throttle linkage.
