Repair Procedure
This repair involves installing new leaf springs, new height sensing brake proportioning valve lever, lever bushing and linkage rod.1. Remove the original rear leaf springs and install the new springs as described in the M.R. 277 manual.
WARNING: THE BRAKE PROPORTIONING VALVE ADJUSTMENT AND THE SUBSEQUENT LEVER AND LINKAGE ROD REPLACEMENT MUST BE PERFORMED WITH THE VEHICLE AT CURB WEIGHT (UNLOADED) ON A FLAT LEVEL SURFACE. FAILURE TO DO SO COULD RESULT IN UNSATISFACTORY BRAKE PERFORMANCE.
NOTE: THE PROPORTIONING VALVE (A) IS MOUNTED TO A BRACKET WHICH IS ATTACHED TO THE UNDERBODY.
FIGURE 1:
2. Using a thin straight blade screwdriver, release the linkage rod lock clasp (B). (Figure 1)
FIGURE 2:
3. Remove the brake proportioning valve lever retaining nut (D). (Figure 2)
NOTE: EARLY 1986 MODELS HAD A WASHER (E) BEHIND THE RETAINING NUT (D) INSTEAD OF THE RETAINER (G) THAT IS PART OF THE LEVER ASSEMBLY ON ALL OTHER MODELS. DISCARD THIS WASHER. THE REPLACEMENT LEVER HAS A RETAINER AND DOES NOT REQUIRE A WASHER.
4. Remove and discard the proportioning valve lever (F), bushing (H) and linkage rod as an assembly. (Figure 2)
NOTE: WHEN THE HEIGHT SENSING BRAKE PROPORTIONING VALVE IS ADJUSTED OR THE LEVER IS REMOVED, THE BUSHING (H) MUST BE REPLACED.
FIGURE 3:
5. Clean the threads of the proportioning valve mounting bolts that protrude through the back of valve.
6. Turn the proportioning valve shaft so that "D" shaped edge (J) is positioned as shown. (Figure 3)
FIGURE 4:
7. Loosen the proportioning valve mounting bolts two turns.
8. Install proportioning valve adjusting gauge number 6221 (K) to the valve mounting bolts and to the "D" shaped flat edge of the valve shaft. (Figure 4)
When the gauge is properly installed there is no clearance between the gauge and mounting bolts or the gauge and valve shaft.
FIGURE 5:
WARNING: THE LINKAGE ROD MUST BE CONNECTED TO THE BRACKET ON THE AXLE AND TO THE BRAKE LEVER BEFORE THE BRAKE LEVER/BUSHING ASSEMBLY IS PRESSED ONTO THE PROPORTIONING VALVE SHAFT.
IF STEPS 9 THROUGH 12 ARE NOT PERFORMED IN THE FOLLOWING SEQUENCE, UNSATISFACTORY BRAKE PERFORMANCE COULD RESULT.
9. Attach the new linkage rod (L) to the ball stud (M) on the axle bracket and to ball stud on the brake lever (N). (Figure 5)
Close the clasps at the ends of the linkage rod.
10. Position the lever/bushing assembly over the end of the proportioning valve shaft.
11. Place bushing installation tool 6224 (P) between the back of the proportioning valve and the valve mounting bracket with the valve shaft inside the bore of installation tool driver.
12. Tighten the driver nut (O) to install the lever/bushing assembly onto the valve shaft.
13. Remove the installation tool 6224.
14. Remove the adjusting gauge 6221. Tighten the proportioning valve mounting bolts to 13 N-m (118 in.lbs) torque.
15. Install the lever retaining nut and tighten to 11 N-m (100 in.lbs) torque.
