TRANSFER CASE Attention: Service Department
SERVICE DIAGNOSIS CHART-ADDITIONAL PROCEDURE
An additional diagnostic procedure has been developed for the Service Diagnosis Chart on page 5 of the August, 1986 edition of the T.C. 242 Component Service Manual, P/N 8980 010 420.
PROCEDURE:
NOTE: Before attempting to repair a suspected transfer case malfunction, check all other driveline components first. The actual cause of a problem may be related to such items as axles, propeller
shafts, wheels and tires, or transmission. If all other driveline components are in good condition and operating properly, refer to this Service Diagnosis Chart for further information.
Condition
Possible Cause Correction
TRANSFER CASE WILL Incomplete shift due to drivetrain Driver must momentarily release the
NOT SHIFT THROUGH torque load. accelerator pedal to complete the shift.
HIGH LOCK RANGE
(Light Remains On). Incorrect tire pressure(s). Inflate all tires equally to correct pressure.
Excessive tire wear Switch tires - Install the two tires with the
most wear (one on the front/one on the rear).
Excessive vehicle loading Check vehicle loading - Do not exceed
the vehicle's GVW.
