DISTRIBUTOR ALIGNMENT FLANGE BREAKAGE
When removing distributors from 1986-1987 Wrangler/YJ/Cherokee/Wagoneer/Comanche vehicles equipped with 2.46L engines and 1987 Cherokee/Wagoneer/Comanche vehicles equipped with 4.0L engines, the timing alignment flange may be found to be broken off from the distributor housing.
It is not necessary to replace the distributor housing for service correction.
PROCEDURE
NOTE: Perform this procedure with the distributor removed from the engine.
1. The broken alignment flange can be reattached to the distributor housing using a two-part epoxy glue, or equivalent.
Holddown Clamp:
2. Inspect the distributor holddown clamp. If there is evidence of contact with the alignment flange on the bottom side of the holddown clamp (A), replace the holddown clamp P/N 317 3227.
3. Install a replacement gasket, P/N 318 1288, at the base of the distributor.
4. Install distributor holddown clamp. Tighten the retaining bolt to 11-14 N-m (8-10 ft-lbs).
CAUTION: Distributor holddown bolt torque is critical.
