NEW SHIFT LEVER BOOT
A new shift lever boot, P/N 8953 004 433, has been used since the start of 1987 model production. This boot is released for service use on 1984-86 Cherokee/Wagoneer models equipped with a manual transmission.
The new boot provides improved fit and increased flexibility which may reduce shift effort in cold climates.
Installation of the new boot is as follows.
BOOT INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Loosen shift knob locknut (A) and remove the knob (B) and locknut from the lever.
2. Disengage the shift boot (C) from the console by pressing inward on the locking frame (D).
3. Remove the boot and locking frame from the shift lever (E).
4. Remove the locking frame from the boot and discard the old boot.
5. Install the locking frame in the new boot and install the assembled frame and boot on the shift lever.
NOTE: Be sure the tall end of the boot flange (F) is facing forward.
6. Snap the locking frame into the console.
7. Install the locknut and shift knob on the shift lever.
