LIFTGATE CRACKING AT LATCH AREA
Some of the subject vehicles may exhibit stress cracking in the latch area of the liftgate.
A reinforcing plate has been developed to strengthen the latch area of the liftgate and can be installed as follows.
Reinforcing Plate on Liftgate at Latch Area:
Location of Screws Attaching the Latch to the Liftgate:
PROCEDURE
1. Prime and colorcoat the reinforcing plate (A).
2. Remove the screws (B) attaching the latch to the liftgate.
3. Lightly sand the area of the liftgate that the reinforcing plate will cover. Follow-up the sanding with a scraper that will scratch the surface to create a good bonding surface for structural adhesive.
4. Apply structural adhesive (3 M 08101, Kent Industries 20250 or an equivalent product) to the bonding area.
Location of Aluminum Pop-Rivets and Screws:
5. Position the reinforcing plate on the liftgate and install the retaining screws (B).
6. Drill three 4 mm holes and install four 3.5 mm diameter by 11 mm aluminum pop-rivets at (C).
7. Clean the excess adhesive from the edge of the plate.
