HORN FAILURE/RELOCATION
The horns installed in 1984-85 and 1986 Cherokee/Wagoneer vehicles that were manufactured prior to September 2, 1985, are mounted in a horizontal position.
In this position, water can collect in the crimped area of the horn body, which may result in horn failure.
To correct this problem, replacement horns should be installed vertically according to the procedure below.
TEMPLATE FORRELOCATING HORNS:
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the grille.
2. Disconnect the wire harness connectors, remove the attaching nuts and bolts, and remove the horns.
3. Photocopy the attached template.
4. Cut around the perimeter of the copied template outline and cut out the original upper horn attaching bolt hole locations.
5. Place the template on the body panel so that it is aligned with the original upper horn attaching bolt holes.
6. Using the template as a guide, center punch the locations for the replacement horn attaching bolt holes.
7. Remove the template and drill small pilot holes in the body panel at the center-punched hole locations.
8. As indicated on the template, drill 5-mm (3/ 16-in) diameter holes and 9-mm (5/16-in) diameter holes in the body panel.
7. Install the replacement bracket and horn assemblies.
8. Ensure that the horns do not interfere with the fit of the grille and verify that the horns operate normally.
9. Install the grille.
NOTE: If only one original horn is replaced, the remaining original horn must be relocated at the applicable vertical position indicated on the template.
