1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove air cleaner.
2. Drain cooling system.
3. Disconnect wire connectors, vacuum hoses, fuel line and control linkage from carburetor, then remove carburetor attaching nuts and the carburetor.
4. Remove A/C compressor, if equipped, and position aside. Do not disconnect hoses from compressor.
5. Disconnect wires from spark plugs and ignition coil, then remove distributor cap.
6. Mark distributor position in relation to cylinder block, then remove distributor hold-down bolt and the distributor.
7. Remove EGR valve retaining bolts and the EGR valve.
8. Disconnect air injection and charcoal canister hoses.
9. Remove air injection pipe bracket from left valve cover.
10. Remove left valve cover and the diverter valve.
11. Remove diverter valve and coil retaining bracket, then the right valve cover.
12. Remove upper radiator hose, then disconnect heater hose.
13. Disconnect coolant temperature switch wire connectors.
14. Remove intake manifold retaining bolts, then the intake manifold.
15. Reverse procedure to install. Torque manifold bolts to specification in sequence shown in Fig. 4.
NOTE: When installing new intake manifold gaskets, note gaskets are marked right side and left side. Install them as indicated to maintain proper engine operation.
