Fuel Injector - Hard Starting Condition

HARD STARTING CONDITION
1986 Cherokee-Wagoneer-Comanche models and 1987 Wrangler models built before VIN 2BXXXXXXXXX524690 with 2.46L TBI engine may exhibit repeated stalls when starting cold. This condition may be caused by a fuel injector.
Service correction involves diagnosis to verify that the fuel injector is causing the condition and, if necessary, replacing the fuel injector.
DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE
1. The vehicle must be currently exhibiting the condition. That is, vehicle will stall after starting when the engine is cold.
2. Disconnect field wire (A) at the alternator.
3. Start the vehicle. If the vehicle continues to run, fuel injector replacement is required.
4. If the engine continues to stall, perform vehicle test with the M.S. 1700 and continue diagnosis.
5. Turn off the ignition and connect field wire
(A) at the alternator.
FUEL INJECTOR REPLACEMENT
1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
2. Remove wire harness connector (B) from the injector.
3. Remove injector retaining clip screws (C).
4. Remove injector retainer (D).
5. Using a pair of small pliers, grasp the center collar (E) of the injector and carefully remove injector (F) with a lifting-twisting motion. Discard upper and lower O-rings
(G) and (H). Note that backup ring (J) fits above upper O-ring (G).
6. Lubricate the replacement upper (G) and lower (H) O-rings with Lithium base grease. Install the O-rings in the housing bore.
NOTE: Make certain that lower O-ring (H) is seated down in its bore.
7. Install Backup ring (J) over upper O-ring (G).
8. Position replacement injector (F) in throttle body (K) and center the nozzle in the lower housing bore.
9. Seat injector (F) with a pushing-twisting motion making certain that the aligning pin
(L) engages slot in throttle body (M) so that injector harness connector (B) can be connected to the injector.
10. Install retainer clip (D) and screws (C).
11. Connect injector wire harness (B).
12. Check the injector assembly for proper sealing by viewing the injector through
throttle body with the key on. If improper sealing is observed, reinstall the injector. Return to Step 2 and continue the injector replacement procedure.
13. Install the air cleaner assembly.
