Timing Chain & Sprockets Replacement

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove vibration damper pulley, damper, timing case cover and gasket.
3. Remove crankshaft oil slinger.
4. Remove camshaft sprocket retaining screw and washer.
5. Remove distributor drive gear and fuel pump eccentric, Fig. 8.
6. Rotate crankshaft until timing mark on crankshaft sprocket aligns with timing mark on camshaft sprocket, Figs. 9 and 10.
7. Remove crankshaft sprocket, camshaft sprocket and timing chain as an assembly.
8. Assemble timing chain, crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket with timing marks positioned as shown in Figs. 9 and 10.
9. Install timing chain and sprocket assembly onto engine.
10. Install fuel pump eccentric and distributor drive gear. Install fuel pump eccentric with word ``REAR'' on eccentric facing toward camshaft.
11. Install camshaft washer and retaining bolt. Torque bolt to 30 ft. lbs.
12. To verify correct installation of timing chain, proceed as follows:
a. Rotate crankshaft until timing mark on camshaft is at the three o'clock position.
b. Starting with the pin directly adjacent to camshaft sprocket timing mark, count the number of pins downward to timing mark on crankshaft sprocket.
c. There must be 20 pins between these two points.
14. Install crankshaft oil slinger.
15. Remove original oil seal from timing case cover.
16. Install new seal into timing case cover, then position cover onto engine. Torque case cover bolts to 25 ft. lbs.
17. Install vibration damper and pulley.
18. Install battery ground cable.
