4. Remove gearshift lever retaining pin, then the gearshift lever.
5. Remove lock plate cover.
6. To remove lock plate and snap ring, proceed as follows:
a. Inspect and identify steering shaft nut thread type. Metric shafts have an identifying groove in the steering wheel locating splines. Standard type threads do not have this groove.
b. If the steering shaft has standard type threads, use lock plate compressor tool J-23653 or equivalent to compress lock plate and remove steering shaft snap ring.
c. If the steering shaft has metric threads, replace compressor tool standard forcing screw with Metric forcing screw J-23653-4 before installing tool into steering shaft. The lock plate is under spring tension. Do not attempt to remove lock plate without using the compressor tool.

23. Insert a suitable screwdriver into tilt spring retainer slot and compress retainer approximately 3/16 inch. Rotate retainer approximately 1/8 of a turn counterclockwise, then remove retainer and spring. Tilt spring is under strong spring tension.
24. Place housing in center (non-tilt) position.
25. Using tool J-21854-1 or equivalent, remove housing pivot pins.
26. Lift tilt lever, then disengage locking shoes and remove housing. Remove both ball bearing assemblies from housing if bearings are to be replaced.
27. Remove tilt lever.
28. Using tool J-22635 or equivalent, remove release lever pin from housing.
29. Remove lock shoe pin from housing. During removal of lock shoe pin, compress the lock shoe springs to relieve spring tension on pin.
30. Remove lock shoes and lock shoe spring.
31. Disconnect steering shaft from intermediate shaft coupling. Remove steering shaft through upper end of column.
32. Disconnect steering shaft by folding shaft 90° and separating upper and lower halves at the flexible joint.
33. Remove ignition switch.
34. Remove lock rack and remote rod.
35. Remove lower bearing retainer snap ring, retainer, bearing and adapter.
36. Remove support to shift bowl attaching screws. Remove shift gate attaching screws and support.
37. Using tool J-23072 or equivalent, remove shift tube from steering column jacket.
38. Remove retainer plate by rotating shift bowl clockwise, sliding plate out of jacket notches, tipping plate down toward shift bowl hub and removing plate bottom side first.
39. Remove wave washer and shift tube spring.
40. Remove shift bowl from steering column jacket.
41. Remove lower bearing retaining clip, bearing retainer, bearing and bearing adapter assembly.
ASSEMBLY
1. Coat friction and bearing surfaces with suitable grease.
2. Mount shift bowl onto steering column jacket.
3. Install shift tube spring, wave washer and retainer plate into shift bowl.
4. Install shift tube through lower end of steering column jacket, then align tube spline with shift bowl keyway.
5. Install tools J-23073-2 and J-23073-4 or equivalents onto shift tube. Spring-loaded lower foot of tool must engage shift tube inner shoulder. Tool guide must be completely seated against shift tube.
6. Tighten tool spring tension nut.
7. Install tools J-23073-3 and J-23073-4 or equivalents, over puller stud and tighten tool nut J-23073-2 to pull shift tube into shift bowl.
8. Remove shift tube installer tools.
9. Install shift tube thrust washer and retainer plate snap ring.
10. Install lower bearing adapter with notched end of adapter facing lower end of steering column. Install lower bearing into steering column with metal face toward lower end of steering column. Install lower bearing retainer and retainer spring clip.
11. Install shift gate onto support.
12. Install shift gate and support assembly onto shift bowl. Align V notch in support with steering column jacket notch.
13. Install steering shaft through upper end of column.
14. Install ball bearings into column housing.
15. Install tilt lever.
16. Insert ignition switch remote rod between shift bowl and column jacket.
