WORKSHOP MANUAL UPDATE

Information

This I.S. Note provides the information needed to service the choke mechanism on model BBD carburetors used with 1982-83 AMC six-cylinder engines.

Although the BBD carburetor choke mechanism is preset at the factory and will not normally require any further adjustment, the choke mechanism should be serviced during major overhaul of the carburetor. Refer to the following procedure and make a note of this information on the first page of Chapter 1J in the 1982 AMC Technical Service Manual and Supplement No. 1 to this manual.
PROCEDURE

Choke Disassembly

NOTE: The choke mechanism on BBD carburetors cannot be serviced with the carburetor on the engine. The carburetor must be removed to properly service the choke components.

FIGURE 1 MODEL BBD CARBURETOR CHOKE COMPONENTS:

1. Note and record the color and position of the choke housing index key for assembly references (Fig. 1). The key color indicates basic choke setting.

FIGURE 2 MODEL BBD CARBURETOR CHOKE COVER RIVET LOCATIONS:

2. Grind the heads off the choke cover rivets (Fig. 2) and remove the retainer, choke cover and coil, gasket, and baffle. Remove the remaining portion of the rivets after removing the cover.
3. Remove the choke lever screw and the choke lever.

4. Disconnect the choke rod and remove the choke shaft from the housing.

5. Clean and polish the choke shaft and the shaft bore in the housing with crocus cloth.

6. Inspect the choke cover and coil. Replace both components as an assembly if either part is damaged. Replace the cover gasket if damaged and replace the choke lever or baffle if these parts are damaged.
Choke Assembly

1. Install the choke shaft in the housing and connect the choke rod to the shaft.

2. Install the choke lever and lever attaching screw.

3. Install the choke baffle, gasket, cover and coil, and index key. Be sure to align the key notch in the cover with the index key tang.

4. Install the choke cover retainer. Secure the retainer and cover using replacement screws. Do not tighten the screws completely at this time.

5. Position the choke cover at the following basic setting as indicated by index key color:

Gold index key - sets choke at 0 Red index key - sets choke at one notch rich
Green index key - sets choke at two notches rich

6. Tighten the choke cover screws.
