SEAT LATCH PAWL MODIFICATION
On some 1983-85 CJ Models, the seat latch pawl used to tilt the seat forward may bend causing a binding condition. To repair this condition and prevent reoccurrence, perform the following service correction.
SEAT LATCH PAWL ASSEMBLY:
PROCEDURE
1. Manually straighten the seat latch lever (A) (pawl) and return it to the proper position.
2. Check the operation to ensure that the latch is functional.
3. Remove the seat assembly (B) from the vehicle as outlined in the M.R. 255 on page 49.
4. Remove the seat cushion-to-seat frame retaining bolts and remove the seat from the seat frame.
5. Secure the seat frame in a vise.
6. Remove the plastic cover from the seat latch lever.
7. Draw a line one inch from the outer end of the seat latch lever as shown..
8. Using a hack saw, cut along the line and remove any burrs with a file as necessary.
9. Cut one inch off of the inner end of the plastic cover.
10. Install the plastic cover on the latch lever.
11. Install the frame on the seat cushion and install the seat assembly in the vehicle as outlined in the M.R. 255 on page 49.
12. Recheck the seat latch operation to ensure that it operates properly.
