Dead Battery - Excessive Quiescent Drain With Auto Headlamp System On - Service Action S840

Issue:

A concern has been identified with the automatic headlamp system on 2003 MY XK Range vehicles within the above VIN range.

In some cases the automatic headlamp system does not shut off completely when the ignition is in the "OFF" position. This can lead to excessive battery drain resulting in the driver experiencing difficulty starting the vehicle.

If the vehicle is left unused with the auto headlamp function in the "On" position, the body processor fails to enter "sleep" mode, resulting in battery quiescent drain increasing from 30 mA to in excess of 200 mA. The vehicle may not start without assistance.

A link lead incorporating a diode to the lighting switch on the steering column must be installed to prevent battery drain.

Action:

Contact the current users of 2003 MY XK vehicles within the above VIN range and arrange, at their convenience, to bring the vehicle into the workshop.

Perform the following modification

INSTALLING LINK LEAD

1. Open the luggage compartment, fit vehicle protection kit.

2. Disconnect the battery, see Workshop Manual, JTIS, CD ROM, section: 414-01.

3. Remove the driver side dash liner.

4. Disconnect the column lighting stalk switch connector SC2 (yellow 10-way). Illustration 1).

5. Unlatch and open the anti-back-out device on connector SC2.

6. Back out terminal (blue/yellow wire) from connector SC2 cavity 4. Illustration 2. Refer to Figure 0.2 of the 2003 MY XK Electrical Guide.

Note:
Use tool fitted with blade "B" from the Jaguar Harness repair kit to perform the previous operation.

Note:
Take care not to disconnect the terminal (yellow/blue wire) from connector SC2 cavity 1.

7. Place the new two-way connector to front; ensure that the anti-back-out device is open.

8. Insert the disconnected terminal (blue/yellow wire) into the cavity of the new connector. Illustration 3.

Note:
The terminal must be fitted into the two-way connector cavity so as to connect to the diode yellow wire.

9. Close and latch the two-way connector anti-back-out device.

10. Connect the new diode assembly fly-lead (yellow wire) to the new two-way connector. Illustration 3.

11. Insert the terminal (blue wire) from the new diode assembly into connector SC2 cavity 4. Illustration 3.

12. Close and latch connector SC2 anti-back-out device.

13. Connect the lighting stalk column switch connector SC2 (yellow 10-way).

14. Using a suitable adhesive tape, position and secure the two-way connector and diode assembly (Illustration 4).

15. Refit the dash liner.

16. Reconnect the battery, see Workshop Manual, JTIS, CD ROM, section: 414-01.

17. Remove the vehicle protection kit.

18. Close the luggage compartment and the door.
