Pinion Seal

Raise the vehicle on a ramp. Remove the prop-shaft to drive flange securing bolts (Fig.2).

Reposition the prop shaft for access.

Using a torque wrench, measure the torque required to turn the pinion through the backlash.

Ensure that the pinion is reset before each measurement.

Mark the flange securing nut to pinion shaft. Remove the pinion flange securing nut and place a two leg puller to the front. Undo the tool centre bolt and fit and align the puller to the pinion flange. Tighten the tool centre bolt to the extract flange.

Place the puller aside and using suitable seal remover tool, displace and remove the pinion seal. Clean flange and casing seal faces.

Fit and align the new seal to Service Tool 18G 1 428A (Fig.3). Fit and fully seat the seal to the casing and place tool aside.

Lubricate the pinion seal and fit and fully seat the drive flange to the pinion / seal. Fit and tighten the drive flange securing nut to mark. Using a suitable torque wrench check pinion pre-load (35-55 lbs in).

Reposition the propshaft to the drive flange. Fit and tighten the securing nuts / bolts. Undo and remove the final drive oil filler plug then clean the plug.

Check and top up the oil level. Fit and tighten the filler plug.

Ensure fixings / fastenings are torque tightened to the specified tolerances.

Lower the ramp.
