Beginning with the 1990 MY, XJ-S vehicles incorporate a tilt steering wheel and air bag restraint system.
The tilt steering column uses a new upper to lower column universal joint. The lower end still has spines to the lower column, and the connection to the upper column has a "double D" joint to match the upper column, (fig. 1).

CAUTION: Do not attempt service or maintenance work on the airbag system without Jaguar-specified tools and service procedures. Do not remove the steering column or steering wheel from the vehicle without first disarming and removing the airbag assembly.
To center the steering wheel, it must be removed and centered on the splines.
If steering rack removal is necessary, the following procedure should be used:
^ Disarm and remove the airbag module from the steering wheel (refer to operation 57.60.02 of the XJ-S repair manual).
^ Remove the steering rack as described in operation 57.10.01 of the XJ-S repair manual. It is not necessary to disconnect the upper and lower column universal joint.
^ Disconnect the lower universal joint at the steering rack.
^ After installing the new rack, center it using service tool JD 120.
^ Remove and center the steering wheel. If necessary, final steering wheel centering can be achieved by adjusting the tie rods.
^ Reinstall the airbag module (refer to Technical Bulletin section 57, number 2).
