Differential Cover Gasket

RENEW

Drive the vehicle on to a ramp.

Raise the ramp.

Fig.1:

Remove the fourteen bolts and setscrews (1, Fig.1) securing the bottom tie-plate to the cross-beam and inner fulcrum brackets.

Drain the oil from the final drive into a suitable container. Remove the speed transducer from the rear cover (if fitted).

Fig.2:

Remove the ten setscrews (1, Fig.2) and remove the rear cover (2, Fig.2), noting the position of the identification tabs.

Remove and discard the gasket (early cars only).

Fig.3:

NOTE: Later vehicles do not use a gasket. A 'finned' housing cover (Fig.3) indicates the later condition. Clean off any old gasket or sealant from the rear cover and the hypoid housing.

Smear the rear cover flange with Wellseal jointing compound and fit a new gasket to the casing (early cars only).

Apply silicon sealant to the cover and housing faces (later cars only).

Refit the rear cover.

Coat the threads of the securing bolts with Loctite.

Refit the speed transducer (if fitted).

Refill the final drive unit with new oil.

NOTE: The vehicle must be level when checking the oil level.

Refit the bottom tie-plate. Fit and tighten the bolts and setscrews.

Lower the ramp.
