Parking Brake Caliper: Service and Repair

REMOVE
1. Raise car on a lift or support rear with suitable jack stands.

Rear Suspension Tie Plate:

2. Remove nuts (6) and bolts (14) securing tie plate to suspension carrier and remove tie plate.
3. Disconnect return springs from caliper arms.
4. Using a suitable pry bar, move handbrake caliper arms towards driveshaft and disengage cable from each arm. Position handbrake cable away from calipers.

Handbrake Caliper:

5. Bend down locking tabs securing handbrake caliper mounting bolts, then remove mounting bolts, tab washer and retraction plate.
6. Remove caliper by sliding to the rear, around the brake disc. When the caliper is at the rear of the disc, reposition it toward the middle of the suspension unit and remove it out the bottom.

NOTE: The calipers should be checked for proper self-adjusting operation, before they are refitted to the car.

Handbrake Caliper:

OVERHAUL
1. Remove pads from carriers.
2. Remove screw securing cover to carrier.
3. Remove split pin from pivot pin.
4. Remove pivot pin and cover.
5. Unscrew ratchet nut from adjusting screw.
6. Clean threads on adjusting screw and nut. Be sure the nut turns freely.
7. Clean any old, hardened grease from the unit.
8. Apply new grease or antiseize to threads and under ratchet spring piece.
9. Reverse steps to reassemble.

Handbrake Pads:

REFIT
1. If new pads are fitted or caliper has been overhauled, adjust caliper by holding one carrier and rotating the other, until a dimension of approximately 0.75 in (19 mm) between pad surfaces, is reached. This will assist in refitting. Be sure of pad orientation.
2. Place caliper into rear suspension unit. Long carrier arm should be on inside of brake disc.
3. Slide caliper up around brake disc and position into mounting bracket.
4. Check mounting holes with a mirror for alignment.
5. Fit retractor and recheck alignment with mirror.
6. Fit tab washer plate and threaded mounting pins. Be sure the pins engage the caliper holes. (It is easy to miss one!) It is recommended that the short carrier pin is engaged first.
7. Tighten mounting pins and bend lock tabs.
8. Operate caliper lever(s) several times to adjust pad clearance.
9. Reconnect return springs and cable.
